Vampiric Wolf stalking me... *SPOILER*

AnduinAnduin Member Posts: 5,745
Need some comparison stories.

I usually head south straight after picking up Imoen, Xzar, Montaron, Jaheria and Khalid and then turn west on the map north of Nashkel, to kill Drizzt in the most evil way possible.

I surround Drizzt with my NPCs, then remove them from my party... Once they all have turned their backs to the Drow, ignoring his pleas for clemency, I use a quaterstaff to brain him. I then pick up my band of adventurers, pick up the loot and then never ever talk about the day we ran into that Drow...

Anyways...

Before I had no problems with this. Although level 1, the monsters encountered up to this point are pitiful and easily dispatched with long range ammunition and the odd Larloch spell...

But recently (after last update?)... After killing Drizzt or before, always on the map north of Nashkel, I run into a Vampiric wolf. It is turning into my worst knightmare. It is stalking me.

It does not appear to be a random spawn, as it is always there... Or am I being paranoid?

The only weapons I have that seem to hurt it at this point is a +1 Dagger I got from Fuller in Candlekeep, Imoen's wand of missiles and any spells Xzar has.

Where has this Vampiric wolf come from?

Why did he appear at the same time as the movie Red Dog on the TV?

And most importantly HOW DO I KILL IT WITHOUT IT KILLING ME!

Do you have any mods installed? I've seen that vampiric wolf before, but never in BG:EE.

The way you kill one is with any magic weapons. It is immune to normal weapons. It also has a paralyzing bite (save vs. spell on every hit or held), so it's best to kite it and take it out with spells, wands, and +1 ammunition from ranged weapons.

I have the simple xp cap remover in my override folder. That is it.

Not that I will get to the xp cap at this rate!

I used to see a Vampiric Wolf using the improved Ulcaster mod, that placed an improved one Vampiric wolf in the ruins...

It would be very freaky that somehow the wolf escaped the zip file to haunt me now...

Shouldn't I come across worgs, dread wolfs or even winter wolfs first before finding this monster wolf!?!

Just for completeness, I have modified my main character to be a fighter / wildmage / thief.

That is all. Getting a bit freaked now... He doesn't seem to follow me to the next map, but is there when I go back... Is that normal?

I'll have to hightale it outta there to Beregost and rearm... Someone out there does not want me to complete my quest...

I have encountered the same wolf and I am only playing Classic with Tutu. It is normally just a bit north and west of that first group of Hobgoblins along the rocky path heading south to Naskal. First time I encountered, it totally destroyed my party (no magic weapons to combat it). But I eventually hunted it down and ended it's undead existence. I think it belongs to the Baskervilles.

    It's the Black Hound :P

He is most definitely red... red with blood...

If by map North of Nashkel you mean this one

    http://www.forgottenwars.com/bg1/ar4300.htm

there are indeed two spawn points, active only during the night, that can eventually generate one or two Vampiric Wolves both in BGEE and vanilla BG1.

@the_spyder That is the path I take to get to Drizzt as it is the quickest. Glad I am not going mad. Maybe I have spawned it before, but was of a higher level so could handle it? It seems an evil beast to find so early at present.

@Erg Yes. That map. TWO SPAWN POINTS! Don't cross that map at night people!

You will come to fear the red wolf! (unless you are level 3)

    EDIT: Typo

Yeah, Vampiric wolves don't regenerate last I remember, so it's simple enough to plink them to death with your wand as long as it takes, so long as you have it busy chasing Khalid in circles or something.

Since there's a free, unguarded Stupefier in Beregost that's trivial to bust the lock for, it's possibly worth making that an early stop in your runs, it's easily one of the best weapons in BG1 for how easy it is to get, and that should help any unpleasantness with vampire wolves.

Ah, I didn't realize it spawned only at night. I usually only adventure during the day, although I have encountered that vampiric wolf there before. What you are supposed to do is RUN. All the way off the map.

I think it was programmed there to teach new players that it is dangerous to move around at night, and it is dangerous to leave the roads and trails and head into wilderness areas, and also that you can encounter things in the game that you are not ready to face, such that retreat or escape is the best option.

As soons as I have a red wolf pelt I will let you know... And tell you how I killed it... I am going to do a small edit to my characters Bio due to this saga...

EDIT: @belgarathmth Better part of Valor! Better part of Valor! (The wolf never eats Khalid!)

On a side note, why are there only Vampiric wolves? Where are the nightmarish Vampiric chinchilla encounters? Or even worse... Vampiric chinchilla BHAALSPAWNS!
  • EudaemoniumEudaemonium Member Posts: 3,199
    Oh, that Bhaal.
  • AnduinAnduin Member Posts: 5,745
@belgarathmth Do you seriously stop and rest at night? You get better hide success rates at night... You also, now it seems, get better monsters.
  • CalmarCalmar Member Posts: 688
Why don't you let the demonic beast hunt one of your guys who acts as decoy while spells and the wand are used by the rest of your party to kill it? Especially the wand can be thrown to another character if its wielder must make a run.

Otherwise, catch the wolf in a circle of NPCs and club him to death with a quarterstaff... ;P

I was seriously freaked out by the encounter with the Bhaalspawn rabbit you find in ToB. Bhaal, when seeking to plant seeds of his future return seemed to have really sunk low...

Now if he had his way with a vampiric wolf...

    On the other hand. No.

You would be surprised at the lack of success this tactic has on the wider world beyond Drizzt...

Khalid keeps running away for a start...

Surely he'd have had to have had his way with a living wolf, whose spawn somehow became vampiric (can Bhaalspawn actually *become* vampires, seeing as they disintegrate when they die? If so that would be a pretty dire flaw in Bhaal's plan).

Bhaal would not have his wicked way with any old dog!

On the other hand, he did funny things with the rabbit...

    And CHARNAMES mother...

Any old dog is one thing, but this was a very special dog.

The hell? Really? You mean there's something INTERESTING about that map?! WHOOOOAA!! Well, my years of doubt have been proven wrong.

    @Quartz

There is no guarantee you will find Vampiric Wolves, if you go there at night hunting them just for the thrill of it :D

There is random chance that the same spawn point will give you Gibberlings, Hobgoblings or nothing at all instead.

However, I don't know how the chance is calculated and if it is really random or it depends on factors like level and number of party members.

    @Anduin

This also means that you were quite unlucky (or very lucky, I guess it depends on the point of view :D ).

I remember running away screaming hysterically from this particular wolf the first time I played ... didn't even have Khalid in the party
  • AnduinAnduin Member Posts: 5,745
The vampiric wolf has died. Armed with some +1 bullets from fieldposts inn and armed with Drizzts scimitars, the vampiric wolf has now been turned into a nice fur coat....

I think a vampiric wolf cloak could be a nice item to find on that map...

The same wolf seems to be stalking me, but it's nice to know I can avoid it by only traveling in daylight.

Where can I buy me some garlic just in case?

The eerie tale of the Vampire Wolf of Beregost sounds more interesting than some of the real side quests...
