Vampiric Wolf stalking me... *SPOILER*

Need some comparison stories.
I usually head south straight after picking up Imoen, Xzar, Montaron, Jaheria and Khalid and then turn west on the map north of Nashkel, to kill Drizzt in the most evil way possible.
I surround Drizzt with my NPCs, then remove them from my party... Once they all have turned their backs to the Drow, ignoring his pleas for clemency, I use a quaterstaff to brain him. I then pick up my band of adventurers, pick up the loot and then never ever talk about the day we ran into that Drow...
Anyways...
Before I had no problems with this. Although level 1, the monsters encountered up to this point are pitiful and easily dispatched with long range ammunition and the odd Larloch spell...
But recently (after last update?)... After killing Drizzt or before, always on the map north of Nashkel, I run into a Vampiric wolf. It is turning into my worst knightmare. It is stalking me.
It does not appear to be a random spawn, as it is always there... Or am I being paranoid?
The only weapons I have that seem to hurt it at this point is a +1 Dagger I got from Fuller in Candlekeep, Imoen's wand of missiles and any spells Xzar has.
Where has this Vampiric wolf come from?
Why did he appear at the same time as the movie Red Dog on the TV?
And most importantly HOW DO I KILL IT WITHOUT IT KILLING ME!

The way you kill one is with any magic weapons. It is immune to normal weapons. It also has a paralyzing bite (save vs. spell on every hit or held), so it's best to kite it and take it out with spells, wands, and +1 ammunition from ranged weapons.
Not that I will get to the xp cap at this rate!
I used to see a Vampiric Wolf using the improved Ulcaster mod, that placed an improved one Vampiric wolf in the ruins...
It would be very freaky that somehow the wolf escaped the zip file to haunt me now...
Shouldn't I come across worgs, dread wolfs or even winter wolfs first before finding this monster wolf!?!
Just for completeness, I have modified my main character to be a fighter / wildmage / thief.
That is all. Getting a bit freaked now... He doesn't seem to follow me to the next map, but is there when I go back... Is that normal?
Vampiric Wolf 4 - 0 Heroes
Although he has not manged to eat Khalid yet as he runs pretty quick...

there are indeed two spawn points, active only during the night, that can eventually generate one or two Vampiric Wolves both in BGEE and vanilla BG1.
@Erg Yes. That map. TWO SPAWN POINTS! Don't cross that map at night people!
You will come to fear the red wolf! (unless you are level 3)
EDIT: Typo
Since there's a free, unguarded Stupefier in Beregost that's trivial to bust the lock for, it's possibly worth making that an early stop in your runs, it's easily one of the best weapons in BG1 for how easy it is to get, and that should help any unpleasantness with vampire wolves.
I think it was programmed there to teach new players that it is dangerous to move around at night, and it is dangerous to leave the roads and trails and head into wilderness areas, and also that you can encounter things in the game that you are not ready to face, such that retreat or escape is the best option.
EDIT: @belgarathmth Better part of Valor! Better part of Valor! (The wolf never eats Khalid!)
Otherwise, catch the wolf in a circle of NPCs and club him to death with a quarterstaff... ;P
Now if he had his way with a vampiric wolf...
On the other hand. No.
Khalid keeps running away for a start...
On the other hand, he did funny things with the rabbit...
And CHARNAMES mother...
There is no guarantee you will find Vampiric Wolves, if you go there at night hunting them just for the thrill of it
There is random chance that the same spawn point will give you Gibberlings, Hobgoblings or nothing at all instead.
However, I don't know how the chance is calculated and if it is really random or it depends on factors like level and number of party members.
@Anduin
This also means that you were quite unlucky (or very lucky, I guess it depends on the point of view ).
I think a vampiric wolf cloak could be a nice item to find on that map...
Where can I buy me some garlic just in case?
