Also on the alignment issue, I get what you are saying, but your definition of evil isn't the D&D definition, because lawful evil balances honor with self interest. Basically quoting the handbook.
Edit: I would completely agree with you that actual evil people would always be out for themselves and not care about loyalty or honor. Which is why I find lawful evil completely impossible to role play.
I just see alignment, at least as it applies to human characters, as just a general trend in behavior. You can't rely on humans to always behave the same way; they can change temporarily in response to emotion or different kinds of pressure etc. In a similar way a Lawful Good character might punch someone or even kick a puppy because they've had a really bad day.
Back on topic; I wouldn't take Viconia. I do like her as a character, but if she were a real person, I don't think I could put up with her.

I'm sorry. It's just... she is very scornful, and does spend a lot of time just mocking and belittling anyone who happens to be close by. I'm not sure my ego could take it.
