Something to remember is the 2nd ed tables are largely inherited from 1st edition, which was disigned with the idea that most characters would retire at about level 9, and it could take several sessions to go from level 1 to 2.
Yeah pacing is just completely different in PNP. Most the DMs I played with would move things fairly quickly to 3rd or 4th level (one or two adventures a level) but then things would slow way down. It may take most of a year to make 9th level. And if you made it into the teens you'd be under pressure to run a follower, kid, or all new character instead (while the old man has a barony to run...)
