    @bbear, it is my Wizard from BG1. Started out with 150ish XP and Cloud Kill in the spell mem list.

    Yeah, any mage who has gone through TOTSC and hit the cap will have enough experience for Cloudkill (there's always been a couple of scrolls of it in the game so they can learn it)

    Maybe someone at the battle had opened the windows for a bit os sunlight before you cast the spell...
