Immersion killing achievement pop ups? No thanks! This game is not about "achievements" (By today's gamer's definition).
IMAGINE.....unlock INGAME PURCHASES OF NEW QUESTS... Collect two diamonds and bring them to a hermit in a cave in the cloak wood, then unlock a new dungeon for the low price of $0.99 ! ....its the stuff of nightmares.
It is the stuff of nightmares et more and more games have crap like this in them. Dragon Age had crap like this in it! >:( Do you hear us @TrentOster ? None of this crap please!
Don't forget about sharing your achievements on Facebook. XXXXXX earned Boo's seal of approval for completing "save Boo" quest! Share it with your friends and join BGEE community today! I seriously doubt such things in the actual game though IMO achievements are good for platformers/action games rather than RPGs.
I seriously doubt that game companies spend that much resources on achievements.
Yup, and the funny thing is that adding in something like achievements increases sales among more casual audiances. I'm not really taking a side in this debate, just that they are already tied into an easy system to allow achievements and it would result in more sales and to getting featured in Game Center.
As for the basic idea of the things you do later in the BG trilogy being connected to what you do early on, I'm all for that. I'd like for it to be so connected that it would barely be worth starting BG2 if you didn't import your save from BG1, with lots of throwbacks and dependancies along the way, and multiple BG2 paths opening only if you had made certain choices in BG1. But obviously that kind of punishing-new-players dependancy isn't in the interest of many developers or publishers. I don't see this as having anything to do with achiements though, it just takes the game tracking your choices and actions throughout.
As for achievements in themselves, I readily detest them and can't think of a single game that has ended up better for their inclusion. Achievements the way I have seen them implemented have nothing to do with immersion or enjoying the game world. If you want to go see an in-game show, go see the show. If you want to explore the entire world, go explore it. Doing it solely to get an achievement to brag about just seems extremely contrived.

Baldur's Gate being linked to Facebook, great, now I'm gonna have nightmares too. At least we know that the devs are thinking along the same lines as us:
Grand Theft Waterdeep - All the 4th Edition rules you love, with an innovative horse-jacking system. Like the game on Facebook to unlock additional achievements, and Tweet your mission scores to unlock an Xbox Live Drizzt Avatar!
I'm not liking the idea of immersion-breaking pop-up achievements, if that wasn't already clear. As @powerfulally said, leave them in the platformers/action games.

That's actually the only thing I want. I just though it would be easy for players to keep track of the choice with achievement written somewhere in the quest journal. That way you could complete the game several times with different path and when you imports your saves in BG2 you can unlock more stuff according to the path you went in BG1.
I notice that there is a lot of hostility towards achievements in this thread but in my honest opinion it would be fun to collect them all by playing the game differently. I'm not asking for achievements where I have to kill X amount of gibberlings and such but well thought out ones that would prove to be a challenge to obtain.
What can I say? I love collecting things and adding achievements would be a subtle but nice incentive to play. I guess
Please, no. *bip* Achievement unlocked- started game for the first time! *bip* Achievement unlocked- sat through entirety of the opening cutscene! *bip* Achievement unlocked- Healed a cow! *bip* Achievement unlocked- learned how to kill rats!
(vomits off to one side) I can live without this kind of thing. Most easily.
Too bad so many games use achievements in the wrong way. Most of people in this thread don't even read the main idea I'm trying to express and jump in crying that achievements sucks based on what they saw elsewhere so I give up lol

Lol! I told you, when you pulled the word achievements people would run.
Im sure everyone agree whit your idea though. But i think it would have been problematic due to the contract and timepreasure. Try making an post whithout calling it achievements, but something else, hehe.
If you complete X quest + Y quest it can unlock Z quest in bg. If you complete Z quest in BG1, you could then import your SAVE into BG2 and unlock a "unic" quest for completing z, if not completed z, then something "bad"occurs,hehe.. I know there's a lot more possibilities but this is a just a quick example.
you dont need to call this achivement, you dont have to call it anything at all! But it would have been an great feature, if it could be done!
I see a lot of negativity towards Achievement implementation here. Personally, I like achievements in a game but in Baldur's Gate? Well, I sort of see where people are coming from. But I would like to see them as long as a few guidelines were kept in mind:
- do not create achievements for mandatory or overly easy parts of the game. - have achievements be limited to a small list of extreme tasks that normally wouldn't have been accomplished unless strived for - have achievement notifications be small and and out of the way... i.e., as text in the combat/dialogue window instead of a giant pop up as seems to have become the norm.
In other words, totally optional, non immersion breaking, and refined to something which adds to the experience if one chooses to pursue it, instead of something that changes the experiences overmuch (which, let's face it, would tick off a lot of BG purists)
I fully support achievements. Immersionwise it doesn't matter, you sit by a computer, and adding a meta-game concept doesnt do anything to immersion (as opposed to adding machine guns for instance, since that is a immersion breaking aspect in-game).
Why have achievements?
1. It gives new reasons to beat the game for old-timers who have already done so many times. 2. It gives people a reason to play the whole game and not just rush for finish ( a modern fenomenon...) 3. It could be used as a hint toward new easter eggs, such as "unlocked by finding Player's Handbook" and the like.
The only thing one must avoid is to link achievements to anything ingame, such as giving an item from unlocking X achievements. Luckily, few developers if any would do such as stupid thing
I would love achievements. It would really add to the game. Then again, I am a BG player who replays the game with solo characters or weird combinations. Some good example achievements would be: - Finish the game with a solo character (never let any NPC join) - Finish the game with a full evil-aligned party - Finish the game with a full good-aligned party - Finish the game with a full neutral-aligned party - Finish the game with below 10 reputation - Finish the game without dying or reloading - Finish the game without any party member dying
Something you really need to work for and something that only shows up after the game. Just for bragging rights
I hate Achievements. Ya know what used to be an achievement? Doing something spectacular just by yourself, recording it, or showing it to your friends, and basking in the glory of mastering the art of doing something awesome by your own merits, not because of a pre-described 'you must be this cool to obtain these merits'.
Not necessarily pointless... especially if the acheivements give rewards. Not only is there rewards, but there is also bragging rights (yes some people care about this). For some people it can also give goals to work towards.
Oh and on another note. I remember playing Skyrim, the cracked version and boy, was that a nice game. Finally got around to buying it and then suddenly out of nowhere a "YOU JUST MADE A POTION" achievement. Jesus christ. That was one of few the time where the shitty, unpatched pirated version was 10 times better than the official version. Wow. Im never buying bethesda again, I reckon.

Will I be able to buy a digital miniature giant space hamster who will follow my cursor around and squeak whenever I click?
