Steam Achievements

This game supposedly has in-game achievements, but as long as it doesn't have Steam achievements it's a no-buy from me.

Allow the fool to make his judgement...
It may sound foolish to you, but I really like to unlock achievements in games. These are incentives that affect my decision on a purchase, and so far nothing really tells me I'm getting more value by getting the EE edition over the GOG edition.

Well, today the game is 50% off on Steam. I don't know how much the GoG version is, but when you take into account continued support and patch releases, you can also factor in that the price today is much closer to what you'd be paying for the 1998 edition.

It doesn't have any in-game achievements, AFAIK.

Achievements are challenges. There are plenty of possible challenges : finish the game with the lowest possible reputation with an evil-oriented team; finish the game as a solo character, with no npc; play a hardcore multiplayer game with only 75-rolled characters. The possibilities may not be endless, but they still are numerous, in my opinion.

The only difference with Steam achievements (or Uplay, or Origin, or whatever your distribution platform of choice is), is that you don't get trophies to show off.

And the list of possible "Steam" achievements would quickly feel re-hashed to me...

1° Achievements with fancy roadtrip country song titles for each chapter completed ("Welcome to the Hotel California" for the 1st Chapter, bleeeeeh)?
2° Achievements for beating the game for each and every possible class/race combo conceivable with the engine (just to really, really up the count)?
3° Achievements for speed runs (opportunity for easy innuendos)?
4° Achievements for specific (boss-)battles (been there, done that, see 1°)?

We've seen this in near every game distributed that way. I would not feel motivated to get those trophies, since I would get them anyway in the long run by playing the game as usual. Weird achievements would be fun, though, like managing to trigger specific npc's interactions.

1° Have Branwen drool over a strong male npc (easy).
2° Have Khalid openly rant about Jaheira's obvious lack of empathy (already mentioned).
3° Have Boo perform a grand total of 42 critical hits in battles (that would be AWESOME).
4° Have Viconia whip Edwin (or Edwina) into submission (that would make BG:EE a PG16 game, ahum).
5° Have Xan get drunk (it is possible, yes it is).

Mmh... Might be interesting that way. But can be done without the opportunity to brag via my Steam profile nevertheless. Has no one started such a thread somewhere, already? It could be fun... :-)

You could have two separate achievements for Noober:

    "Patience of an Oak Tree" if you manage not to kill him;
"It Was Bound to Happen Eventually" if you kill him before he walks away.
