If you want to powergame hardcore, Keeper yourself a multi kensai thief. Fun from begining to end, just try not to be the guy with a target painted on. Shield amulet asap, get ring of gaxx asap in soa, and take uai asap. Tob will be a breeze btw.
well, according to what you want your main to be- what about a swashbuckler? Pretty decent in a fight, can dualwield, gets eventually better thac0 and AC than fighters and is a thief after all...
The only downsides are lower HP and no backstab. Kind of forces you to go scout/trapper.
Agree with @Southpaw, pure Swashbuckler is fun. No powergamey duals. I used to hate Swashbuckler then I finally tried it with zero intention to do anything powergamey and he ended up godly anyway.
Yup. Ends pretty powerful and being a thief, you have lots of utility and possibilities how to handle encounters. (do I stealth in and pickpocket him, carefully lay out traps or charge blindly on?) And to be honest, losing backstab isn't that bad. One word- dagger of poison...and the mage is not going to cast anyway... (okay. two words. come on, "of" ain't a real word!)
