Trent Oster's Analysis of the Development of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition

JalilyJalily Member Posts: 4,681
Trent Oster just did a feature for Gamasutra, outlining what went right and what went wrong during development. I thought people might be interested:

@Jalily Very interesting feature, which gave me more of an understanding of what was involved, but ...

The title of the thread could be misinterpreted by those who are susceptible to panic attacks.

I believe there are a few forward-thinking doctors who believe that it is better to leave the postmortem until after the patient is dead.

Good article, I always appreciate it when developers give detailed insight in when/how problems got started and what it will take to solve them, instead of just saying "We're aware of the problem and we're working on it".
    Excellent read.

It's so great the Devs are open to the community! I find it really important that we can help to make the game better! And I appreciate the level of sincerity of the Devs a lot!

Trent to BG2EE: "Hello child, shall we continue your lessons?"

Yeah, the thread title is accurate but it is perhaps not the best title for the article itself.

The end result is a little less graphical flash for launch than we had initially planned, but we actually had a bit more time to make more widespread improvements as a result, so the project is different; in some ways larger, but still pretty awesome.

Interesting that he says "For launch".. Perhaps something else is planned for graphics??

Postmortem is a standard industry term for these kinds of analyses, which are typically done after release. Gamasutra has a whole section for them: http://www.gamasutra.com/features/postmortem/

But I'll change the title if it bothers people.

@Jalily Not really worth the bother of changing it, but I did a quick double-take when I read it early in the morning! Shortly after, common sense kicked in.

Good to know lessons have been learned from previous missteps. BG:EE still isn't the game it should be - the game that makes Original BG obsolete - but it might get there eventually...

It's nice to see that they can look over their work objectively and also advertise that publicly.

Could have been worse - you could have called it an autopsy ;p
