Questions on how long/big this game really is *Spoilers of course*

Okay, so I have my ideal party set up and everything. All of my characters are around the level 6/7 area. I've done many side quests, but I don't feel like I've done even most of them yet, and I'm currently working on the part of the main quest right after i barge in on the coronation of Sarevok (where you teleport to the thieve's guild).

Now, earlier in the game, and even now really, I notice that in Edwin's spell book, there are nine levels of spells. And I've read that characters can go up to like level 20+. At this current point in the game I've just now gotten to my fourth level spells. So I've used this as sort of a gauge to the length and scope of the game (which I thought was massive). However, I've been reading up a little and happened to come across the fact that there's not only an exp cap in Baldur's Gate, but that you're only around level 7/8 when you finish the entire game o_O

If this is true, not only is this game nowhere near as big as I'd imagined, but it also begs the question, what's the point of even having the slots for higher level spells (level 5 or 6+) if you'll never attain a high enough level to use them?? And why does the game so often refer to higher levels? For instance, the kit description for Ajantis claiming Paladins can begin using priest spells at level 9. If this is all true, it's quite the letdown to me :( I wanted the game to go on for a while, and eventually use badass level 9 spells with Edwin...D:

The sequel for Baldur's Gate allows you to carry over your character from the first one where you be like level 30+. The Enhanced Edition for it is not out yet, but rest assure, you WILL get those 9th level spells. :)

There is also the option to remove level cap. It would make the game ridicolously easy to have level 9 spells tho, so this would spoil the fun and challenge.

There is plenty of game still ahead, especially with BG2EE coming up.

Based on your description, I think you've still got Durlag's Tower ahead of you.
Not an easy feat, especially with minimum reloads.

If you're at the part where you crash Sarevok's party, you can potentially finish the game in an hour or two if you skip all the quests you haven't done yet.

That depends on how many members you have in your party. If you play with a full 6 member party, each character would still only end up with ~250k XP at most.

I thought this exact same thing when I bought the game and played it way back in the day when it first came out. They must've had good foresight to know that they would end up making BG2 and that showing 9 spell lvls would be a nice tease to get people excited about it.

Level 9 spells is where PNP caps out, so in a way they were just being complete. But the sequel will let you get there.

BTW, for the OP, you might want to just leave the thieves guild and go do those other quests. You're not near the cap yet, but if you continue the direction you're going, you will finish the game pretty soon! Go finish the other stuff, then come back.

True, but that said it can be utterly hilarious to walk into the final fight and one-shot Seravok. I like to imagine the looks on his flunkies' faces.

Bg is one big story, BG2 and its expansion Throne of Bhaal are direct continuation of the adventures of your character. So you should wait for BG2:EE to really enjoy lvl 9 spells and epic abilities. It's really cool to watch your character evolve from the beginning, a total noob that smacks rats with his quarterstaff in Candlekeep, to all the way into ToB where you fight god-like beings of world-shattering power.

"Face ME! Face the NEW LORD OF MURDERrrrrrrrrfghfhghhssssss..."
"Oh horse ****! They just disintegrated Sarevok! I'm outta here! Outta my way, Hamster Man!"

And then Semaj became a humble carpenter, but not after receiving a crippling injury from Boo's teeth. That could be an exclamation, "Boo's Teeth". "By Boo's Teeth!" "Boo's Teeth, this is some good fettuccine!".
