lowest possible AC?

In BG:EE, what is the lowest legit (no editing or console etc) armour class, before potions or buffs? I imagine it is something like an elf with 19 dexterity wearing full plate, ring of protection +1, baldurians's helmet, and using Drizzt's defender +5. That would get you down to about -7 off the top of my head.

Any one got a PC to -8 or lower?

I think at some point I had Kagain lower. But @Samus' approach is more effective (if you are her, that is) - it's like casting "Stun" each round with no saves. If you are not her, it's less powerful (enemies must save vs. Blindness and get a saving throw; after level 12 - in BG2 - it's vs. Confusion).

You can get lower than that legitimately. Switch out the ring of prot+1 to a the +2 version from baldur's gate and add the cloak of baldarun as well and that lowers it another 1. If you have a character from the black pits and got the improved cloak of prot+2 that stacks with ring of prot+2 (not sure if it is supposed to) and you can lower your AC 3 beyond what was mentioned in the original post.

I had -12 ish unbuffed AC with viconia AND kagain (I think, don't really remember my other fighter) in vanilla BG1 right before bgee came out. Unbuffed of course. I had them all decked out, ring of prot, cloak of balduran, large shield of missle protection, helm of balduran, full plate, etc etc.

    Full Plate: AC 1
Dex 18: -4 (19 Dex doesn't decrease AC, I think it only gives an AC bonus to missiles)
    Ring of Protection +2: -2
Helm of Balduran/Helm of Glory: -1
    Cloak of Balduran: -1
    Defender +5 Scimitar: -2
    Large Shield +2: -3

    Total: -12

And if what Skia said above is true with the Improved Cloak of Protection +2, then it would bring it down to -13.

I was always under the impression that -10 was the cap for AC. If I'm wrong, I should post this in my "Newest things you've learned" thread.

    Giggity.

I've gotten mine to about -8, from what I can recall...it can totally go lower, though. In Icewind Dale, I got mine to -Astronomical a couple of times.

In the BG2 engine, -24 AC was the hard cap. Though you can get even better theoriticaly, with modifiers against certain weapon types like slashing, piercing, etc.

I am glad BG:EE makes those modifiers a lot more noticeable in item descriptions. Before then, it was a little bit hard to notice. Like, a leather armor is totally useless against piercing and missile weapons.

In BG:EE, well, Coran can get +5 to AC via 21 dexterity if you use up a tome, get him that strength belt, to equip full plate mail, that's base AC 1, with DEX it is -4, get a shield with +2 ac bonus, equip the ring of protection+2, and you have -10 now. Cast Defensive Harmony and he is at -12. -15 vs slashing and 14 vs piercing/missile, thanks to full plate modifiers. Cast improved invisibility on him and all enemies will attack him with -4 penalty, effectively making his basic AC -16. If he gulps a potion of absorption his AC vs crushing will be -26 effectively.

There are also class skills such as a Blade's Defensive Spin and Swashbuckler to consider...

Without cheating, a Swashbuckler can reach level 10 in EE, so that's a bonus to AC of 2. But a Swashbuckler can't use plate/splint/chain mail, so even with that bonus they wouldn't be able to reach absurdly low AC. In BG2EE once they get Use Any Item, and get up to level 40 where they get 8 bonus to AC, we can potentially see -20 or lower.

I've definitely had characters with lower than -10.

Swashbuckler's AC does not shine up to very high levels. But a 10th level Blade can get to-9AC only with basic chainmail and defensive spin. Add some rings and stuff and see it go well below-12.
otherwise, Viconia is quite easy to achieve very low AC with.

If you want the best tank, make your CHARNAME a Cleric.

@lunar: I think the hard cap is -20 in bg2 and -6 from dex bonus (for a total -26)

Hmmm would a Dragon Disciple be good for extremely low AC despite the armor penalties?

    Absolute lowest?

    Start with a Blade.

-9 from the Spirit Armor spell
    -9 from Defensive Spin
-2 from the Ring of Protection
-2 from the Helm and Cloak of Balduran
    -2 from Drizzt's scimitar
    -1 from Kiel's Buckler
-5 from dexterity (Tome+Kiel's Buckler for 20 dex. total, which I believe gives an additional point of AC.)

For a total of -20, with an additional -3 from whatever girdle you're wearing. Eat your heart out Sarevok.
