Xzar is the most evil mage and he his hilarious, but he's not that great :P

Xzar is by far more entertaining and gives you more dual options than say Edwin...

Edwin just has more spells... But then Xzar just likes to rest more...

'I wanted infra vision like the elves... But tis more than just taking there eyes!'

both are funny, Xzar is better if you want to dual him to a cleric, but since you already have Vicky and Edwin has more spells...Edwin.
    I assume you'll dual Shar-Teel to a thief then...

It's a toss-up between Edwin and Baeloth: Edwin is more flexible in that he can reconfigure his spellbook for specific situations (ie: if you're going to face Basilisks, he can prepare a bunch of protection spells) while Baeloth can cast specific spells with far greater frequency. They're both very entertaining characters as well.

Since Baeloth won't be a party member in BG2:EE, I suggest taking him now and picking up Edwin in the next game. :)

Edwin: More overpower, do not force a 2° member on the group, it's funny but only in BG2 (too quiet in BG), joinable in BG2 (what means a lot in roleplay prupose).

Xzar: hilarious, bring a bond to an evil group
    (zentharin faction)
, the thief partner is pretty decent an mostly important is that he can be dualed to priest with 1 tome of understanding.

So, if you want power no matter what, choose edwin.

If you want to see the bitter relation between Edwin, minsc and Dynaheir,
recruit Minsc before, save Dinaheir and then speak with edwin, he will join the party and that will lead to funny events. Do not worry, Minsc doesn't try to kill Edwin in BG (if i'm not wrong), he only try to kill Edwin in BG2 (someone correct me if this statement is wrong)
    .

If you want to bring an specific thief to the party (or if you're a thief), bring edwin.

If you want the zentharin plot to be triggered, bring Xzar, if you want a lunatic in the team, bring xzar (put Tiax too in the party to a completly crazy party).

If you want an evil thief NPC, xzar is the option.

If you want to play a change, and have another evil priest in the team besides Viconia, bring Xzar and dual him at the level or your preference.

Well @shawne, i always have a slot for Dorn and Baeloth in my evil parties, maybe i have to rethink that in my plays with Xzar (as he bring a partner and that can oversize the team), but otherwise i always let 2 slots for them.

    In regards to this comment.

As I recall (and I admit its been awhile) I'm pretty sure If you have all three of them they will come to blows eventually. Googling it brings up this though I can't guarantee the accuracy of the seemingly random percentages the user uses-> http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG/bg_npc_conflicts.php

I stand behind my vote for Edwin. However, if you add the Mod that adds content (Unfinished business??) to Xzar, that is well worth it as well.

Someone you haven't used before. Otherwise Edwin's best.

    @ShadowHunter,

What are you going to do without a thief AND with only one spellcaster/wand-user?
  • the_spyderthe_spyder Member Posts: 5,018
@Urdlen - presumably the OP is going to have Shar-Teel become the party thief.

    Edwin oe Baeloth

Edwin is far and away the best mage for an evil party, or a neutral, non-judgmental party, for that matter. His is the most powerful mage in the game, and despite being an insufferable misogynist and egotist, can be quite amusing.

Except if your Charname is like my charname, in which case there is only room for one insufferable misogynistic egomaniac in the party, and Edwin ain't gonna be it. LOL

While Xzar is a necromancer, which I like... I personally like Edwin's personality that much more. He and his great plans of world domination and the like that he keeps muttering to himself about.

Both. Edwin as mage, Xzar instead of Viconia. He's a better cleric and more entertaining.
  • the_spyderthe_spyder Member Posts: 5,018
@KidCarnival - yeah, but Viccy is easier on the eyes.

@the_spyder - and that helps how?

@KidCarnival - to overcome the sadness that has befallen you when Samus disappeared.

I love Xzar so I would 9 times out of 10 take him along even if you don't plan to dual class him. Thing is he can be very flexible if you're willing to give up a tome. With one of the three tomes of understanding (wis bonus) you can dual class him to a cleric (being a "warrior" class you wont really miss one of them as they wont provide you with a bonus) making him one of the most powerful NPC's in the game since he will have decent mage spellcasting and access to all levels of clerical spells. If you give him the dexterity tome (you might miss this one more being a warrior class) you can dual class him to a Thief and he could become the party thief or one of the party thieves freeing up Shar-Teel's skill points to focus solely on the stealth skills. Lets face it, we all dual shar-teel so she can backstab not for opening locks.

If you don't want to give up either tome (don't be so greedy, jeez!) and are solely interested in the power of the team then Baeloth is the best choice but taking Edwin until level 5 (you cannot recruit him until then) is your best bet.

I give a slight edge to Edwin. They're both fun but Edwin will still be around for BG2EE. Heck, you're playing a warrior, right? I'd ditch Kagain and bring both of them along!

Yeah, you don't need Dorn and Kagain with a warrior charname. Another caster, divine, arcane or both, is the better option.

Magic is seriously OP in the Infinity Engine; only run with one or two meant shields, and get as many casters as you can.
  • Awong124Awong124 Member Posts: 2,642
    Baeloth.

I've never thought Xzar was that great.

Tough choice between Baeloth and Edwin though. But Edwin can't cast Identify, not even from a scroll, so that's pretty inconvenient. And Baeloth comes with a Robe of the Evil Archmagi. It also depends on whether you like playing Mages or Sorcerers.

Xzar. I can't stand that pompous ass Edwin. I kill him every time I see him. His not liking Dynaheir is another negative against him.

This is more true for BG2 than for BG in fact.

@Awong124, baeloth comes with the robe, an staff +1, some potions and 1000GP. It's always worth to take him in the party, even if you gonna left him naked and expell him from the party after that.

Well @CoM_Solaufein, i don't like Dynaheir either XD!

I'd take Baeloth just because I haven't tried him yet.

Baeloth, since specialists are messed up and pointless to use.

Though it's unfortunate that even if you leave him naked the game doesn't allow you to sell his stuff. If you try to sell his stuff, the vendors say they won't buy stolen goods or something like that.
  • kamuizinkamuizin Member Posts: 3,704
Most of them :), but the thief merchant on Baldur's Gate district and The merchant in Durlag's Tower buy the robe without a problem!
