Mysterious note [Black Pits - SPOILER!]

At some point in the Black Pits one of the prisoners (whom I killed in the arena later on) has given me a note and asked me to deliver it to an elven illusionist (the content of the note is useless, it's just a "happy birthday"). I accepted and took the note. I kept it with me all the time, but I've never found this elven illusionist. Yesterday I finished the Black Pits for the first time and I still haven't understood the use of that note. Have I missed something, or was it just some kind of joke?

It maybe some type of joke similar to the golden pantaloons. I'd hold onto it until BG2:EE

Especially given that elves can't technically be illusionists.

... on the other hand, it's pretty easy for an Illusionist to pretend to be an Elf.

What if the illusionist is actually the letter? Made him/herself appear as a letter to escape.

What if the Black Pits are just a dream, dreamt by an elf wishing to be an illusionist?

Clearly the elf changed his/her mage kit with Shadowkeeper.

I thought there was an invisible illusionşst hiding around somewhere, searched high and low with true sight and detect illusions, but found no one. Ofcourse, the illusionist have to be hostile for the spells to work, but still..
