Ideas for semi-legit characters, maybe with RP themes?

WowoWowo Member Posts: 2,064
So I'm playing around with SK a bit trying to come up with some interesting ideas for charname's without creating anything too OP.

A little bit added is fine as SCS is pretty brutal.

So far I've made a multiclassed stalker/cleric. Being restricted to leather armour changes the playstyle considerably from a usual cleric multi with the primary benefit of a x2 backstab. This is a character I'd like to play into BG2 where it'll really take off (and will be arguably OP).

Any other ideas floating around for me to consider? I'm not looking to necessarily create something powergamey, just something with a unique play style I suppose.

Shadowdancer/fighter multi can be very effective, hide in plain sight ability is very powerful, combined with fighter bonuses it could be awesome. Be elf for 19 dex and +1 to hit with swords. Put all points into move silently. Get the stealth boots asap. Fight in the darkness and when st night. Profit.

Can you apply kits to a character even if they don't have the correct base class?

You can apply kits outside of your class, or alteast, add kit innate abilties.

    So, brainstorming:
Archer kit on an archer character (like a fighter/thief to not feel subpar next to Coran)
    Paladin of Lathander
Blackguard kit on an evil character
Undead Hunter kit on an undead hunter character (probably ranger)
Cavalier on a Dragon/Fiend hunter (probably a ranger)
    Beast Master Druid
    Berserker kit on Minsc
Wizard Slayer kit on a wizard hunting character (probably a ranger)
    Kensei Monk
Shapeshifter anything (lycanthropy isnt restricted to Druids)

There's limits to what you can copy with just SK, but you can certainly add some interesting things. Some kit bonuses are added as affect flags, which you can modify. Innate abilities, of course, are very easy to add as well.

Personally, I like "twisted" characters such as evil Rangers or such. They're not really in the spirit of the PnP base, but it's usually not hard to come up with RP justification.

    Wizard Slayer / Mage >:)
For RP reasons it should be WS/Sorcerer but since it's not possible to do that with Sorc, you will have to imagine that the Mage part was something that the character had no choice about (Sorc).

It's quite normal for me to sometimes put kits on classes that i couldn't do normally. Last game i played through i made an Assassin/mage multiclass. This was purely for RP reasons as i don't normally like nor play assassins.

I also feel that kits bring a more unique feeling to a character. A swashbuckling mage is much more entertaining in my mind, than a plain thief mage.

Some of the ones that i have used myself.

    Assassin / Mage multiclass.
    Swashbuckler / Mage multiclass
Bountyhunter / Fighter multiclass. (This character was roleplayed as a bounty hunter, a little bit like greywolf)

I wouldn't say that any of these are that more powerful, and the only reason i do these illegal characters are for my own reasons (RP).

Berserker/Priest of Talos is the multiclass im playing with right now (started fighter/cleric, added priets kid with SK and gave one rage ability) It's fun to play with slightly OP in sone situations but not gamebreaking. I think the rage ability is not realy neaded in bg1 so a Battle priets of Talos would be fine also. (lightning one-shotted tarnash)

I don't think you can apply random kits (because bonuses on level up, including char creation/ level 0 would never get applied).
  • bbearbbear Member Posts: 1,180
Some abominations I have come up with:

    -Mazzy as Fighter/Swashbuckler (multiclass)
    -Cernd as Fighter/Shapeshifter (multiclass)
    -Aerie as Mage/Priest of Lathander
-Nalia as Mage/Assassin (dual class, but raised her thief levels)
-Minsc as Beast Master/Cleric (multiclass, reassign pips)
    -Viconia as Wizard Slayer/Cleric (multiclass)
-Edwin as Conjurer/Cleric (multiclass; not sure if his amulet gives him 2 spells per level for priest levels too)

I enjoy playing a fighter/assassin, sometimes also giving them weapon proficiencies beyond the two dots as they gain levels.

Another thing I'm wondering is a kensai/assassin dual-class. First pick kensai levels as normal, and then upon dual-classing, switch the kit for assassin: I'm reasonably sure that the assorted kensai bonuses on the fighter level side would still remain, would they not?

It depends. Some kit effects are hard-coded, some work via affect flags that you can copy with SK. You can also manually apply certain bonuses (like AC, or innate abilities). Not an elegant solution, of course, but it's possible.

The point is to set your level to 0 in the class where you got the kit. So if you're going to play a multiclass F/T and want to be an assassin, put the thief level to 0. You do have to remove some extra bonuses for some classes and kits, but it's easy to remove 2-4 health and 20 extra thief skills.

If you put a class to level 0 it will automatically level up to 1 and let you get all the special abilities.

I like doing things with dual classes. Specifically I have enjoyed taking a fighter to level 7 and then dual classing them to a kitted class such as Swashbuckler or a cleric kit. The fighter 7 dualed to Swashbuckler is particularly potent due to the bonuses and it is functional from bg1 into bg2 into tob. It's makes a pretty beastly dual wielding front liner even in leather (which is what I prefer to use so thief skills remain useable) but can swap to plate if the need for more AC is there.

What I've enjoyed doing is making a premade party for all but 1 slot so I can have Imoen. In bg1 imoen serves as primary thief until she and one of the fighters hit lvl 7 and then they both dual. The fighter now swashbuckler becomes the party's primary thief while Imoen learns magery and beyond into bg2 since Imoen's thief skills don't improve.

Another interesting thing to do in bg2 is to change imoen from a dual class thief>mage to a multiclass thief/mage so she levels in both classes throughout bg2 and tob (gaining thief and mage hlas which can open interesting opportunities).

By "random" I meant kit without the base class - e.g. you cannot get a blackguard fighter/cleric to behave correctly (abilities on level up, weapon access, etc)

I try to do that in SK, but I cant get it to work. For some reason, I can only transform Imoen into multiclass in any possible combinations except M/T. I think it has to do with the fact that she is already dualclass in M/T.

@Nic_Mercy: How did you get SK to change Imoen from dualclass to multiclass M/T?

If we're bringing NPCs to the discussion, I sometimes like to turn Jaheira to a ranger/cleric. She ends up almost the same thing fluffwise, in my mind, but is much more powerful and interesting.

I like to give my charackter more uses of there abilitys (sometimes having a ability ones per day is boring).
And some extra abilitys like life drain etc. RP wise I call them Bhaal powers.
  • ambrennanambrennan Member Posts: 173
Dual/multiclass is determined by a hidden flag which Shadowkeeper does not display, so you will need near infinity for that.

Re illegal kits: It really depends on how kits are implemented - some add affect (e.g. Kensai, blackguard) which you would have to manually adjust every time the character levels up; others seem work dynamically (e.g. Mage kits) which might work with other classes (my wild sorcerer gets wild surges and extra spells but you need to add NRD, cs, ics manually). So you can have a wild sorcerer but no Kensai monk.

Create a random character with lowly stats. Change appearance to squirrel. Much fun, especially with a suitable soundset.

Other interesting ideas include gnoll swashbucklers, ogre inquisitors, sword spider kensai, jelly priests of talos etc.

@Twilight_Fox, I'm not sure about iwd, but Xanos is a character from Neverwinter Nights, Shadows of Undrentide. He is a sorcerer/barbarian, and you can recruit him at the beginning of the game and develop him either way. (Probably not both if you want him to be effective at either one.)

He has a Russian accent, and sounds like "Boris" from the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" cartoons. He kind of looks like Boris, too.

Perversely, Jaheira seems to have been inspired by Boris' wife, "Natasha".

(LOL, now, if I could just hear Jaheira's voice actress saying, in character, "How long must ve vait here? Moose and skvirrell stir to the south as ve speak!", my life would be complete! LOL)

I almost always use a Kensai/Theif or Kensai/Mage or sometimes Kesnao/Mage/Theif. I always make Yoshimo a Fighter/Shadowdancer from Song & Silence. Finally, I will make Jaheira an Amazon/Druid from the RTTKitpack.

it would be much easier if someone would pack all kits in 1 mod
and 1 mod for all new spells like iwd1 iwd2 spells pnp spells etc.

@joshuar9476 what is this amazon kit?
"AMAZON: amazons are female warriors that decide to train themselves exclusively in the use of ranged weapons and lances. With these two types of weapons, they are without doubt the best warriors in Amn! They love to live in contact with nature and often work with druids to protect forests and animals.
    ADVANTAGES:
    - +2 dexterity
    - +1 charisma
    - +1 thac0 to all the weapons they can use at levels 1-6-11-21
    - Cast "Animal Charm" at level 1-6-11-21
    - Cast Valkiria's Lance at level 1-6-11-21
    - +1 attach for round
    DISADVANTAGES:
    - Only human or half elf
    - Only female
    - They can use only ranged weapons and lances
    - They can specialize only with two handed weapons and with single weapon
    - Need 18 dexterity
    - Need 14 charisma
    - -1 constitution
    - Only not-evil characters"
