And Tube of Medusa from Ecco, the Tides of Time. I actually have friends who thought I was making it up or had been dreaming when I described this game, and this level in particular, to them.
I was fascinated with Ecco the Dolphin as a kid but metrovania games are my kryptonite. The moment I start getting lost I lose all focus and just mess around and never finish the game.
I spent more time swimming around and jumping out of the water in the starting level than I did the rest of the game.
But I agree, it's entire atmosphere was beautiful and the music played a HUGE part in that.
It seems Ecco the Dolphin and Tides of Time have completely different soundtracks depending on what system you are playing on (SEGA CD or Genesis). The genesis version has some cool tunes while the SEGA CD version is the more relaxing one.
I was fascinated by Ecco the Dolphin but could never really play it. I found it too difficult to be enjoyable and I hate games with drowning mechanics (I blame Sonic). When I played it, I mostly cheated my way to different levels to see what they looked like.
Goldeneye 007 on the N64 had some cool tunes. Took me a while to realize that later levels like Antenna cradle and Aztec complex had really good music. I always died before I noticed... https://youtu.be/GQZLEegUK74

Night Requiem, Legend of Legaia. People don't give this game enough credit.

Ecco the Dolphin has a truly horrifying history.
Now to contribute to the music portion and less the destroying people's childhoods portion of our how!

All of the tavern songs in this game are superb!
Terra's Theme, FFVI
Frog's Theme, Chrono Trigger
Defenders of Oasis, all of it (it's all very similar, and it repeats, forever)
Tyrian, from Tyrian
