When you're at the priest or myrkul talking to the dead goblings, if you're a drow you can understand what they say.
With all the reactions NPCs have at a Drow, I think the game actually expects you to have one in your party.
It's like the producers are saying.
"You have been asking to play a drow now since BG1, SO PICK YOUR DAMN DROW... NO MAKE A WHOLE TEAM OF DROWS, AND NAME THEM DRIZZT1 DRIZZT2 DRIZZT3! MUAHAHAH."
I was actually v. surprised at the amount of reaction to your partymembers, having special mini-quests and interactions based on your class and/or race. It was pretty awesome, something that was sorely lacking in...well almost every game except Dragon Age Origins (and even there it was minimal after the start).
