Baldurs Gate 2 Mods etc.

Hi guy's I picked up BG2 last week to play once more while awaiting the BG: EE, BG2: EE resolution.

From a mod point of view I went with:

BG2 Tweak Pack
BG2 Fix Pack
WideScreen Mod

I haven't gone with Ascension as of yet. Do you think it's a must or not?

Also have I missed anything you would deem particularly important?

I would advice you to play through ToB without ascension first, to really apprciate what they have done with it.

Ok cool; I have played SOA previously but never completed it due to a hard disk failure unfortunatley, so from a ToB Point of View I'll stick to non-Ascension for now :)

Sword Coast Stratagems II adds some difficulty and makes fights a lot more interesting.

I do believe Ascension is a must have, although maybe it's not a bad idea to play the original TOB first as SionIV said.

Unfinished Business is also a recommended mod, although I don't have much experience with it.

If you have only played SoA before and haven't finished it you shouldn't have any other mods than the ones you have.

    BG2 tweak pack
    BG2 fix pack
    Widescreen mods

They don't add new content or change old. So it's still the original game you play with some minor tweaks on the side. Once you have completed the game i would advice you to look at mods like :

    SCS (Sword coast stratagems)
    Ascension
    Level 1 NPC

These do change the original game but it's only improvements. You won't be able to understand or notice what they do before you have played through the game once without them.

Thanks guys - I did forget to mention I've also installed Unfinished Business also, mainly for the extra more complete quest arcs.

I have to admit i don't play with unifinished business as i can't help but feel it's not on par with the original. I know it's supposed to be quests they left out, but it just doesn't feel like the game, especially the djin quest.

    hmm ok, I may just re-install and try it without first then;
One other quick question also, does anyone have a link for me to take a peek at an install order for future reference or doesn't it matter if I'm using WEiDU?

With those mods the order doesn't really matter. And just because i dislike unfinished business doesn't mean that you shouldn't play it. In my opinion i just feel that the quests stick out like a sore thumb.

    @ install order
Recommended by basically everyone doing larger/megamod/BWP installs:
Fixes first, tweaks second, widescreen/biffing last

@ install order to take a look at
    Download the latest
    http://www.shsforums.net/files/file/534-big-world-v12-english/
Big World pdf and scroll almost to the end of the pdf (version 12's WeiDU.log begins at page 298 and ends at 323).

    @mods to recommend
    http://www.shsforums.net/files/file/871-bg2tob-throne-of-bhaal-extender/
ToBEX, at least its core component, in order to fix various engine bugs.

If you want more NPC content then I would add NPC Banter Pack and the NPC Flirt Pack (for romances) from Pocket Plane and the Imoen Friendship from Spellhold Studios.

Yes, definitely follow an installation guide. Order of install definitely does matter. A lot of the basic ones don't work unless they get installed first.

EDIT: Here's a link to a stickied guide for the GoG.com version. It's the best summary I've found to date, and it doesn't drown you in details. Also, I advise against using Big World. It takes forever to download and install stuff, it will overwhelm you with dozens of mod choices, and it can create terrible instability, as well as mod conflicts.

EDIT #2: Please note that if you are using discs instead of Gog.com or another direct download site, there is a patch that must be installed before any mods. The Gog.com version is already patched when you download it.
