2x poison use + some thief skills+ fighter throwing poisoned darts that is scary
(for bg:ee i think max you can do is thief6/fighter8)
i think that makes even great RP character and my idea for some let's plays but with bow/crossbow for other stuff like bolts of lighting or arrows of dispell/detonation your build with fighter3/thief could work well but wait till you have 4th level thief before jumping level so you can add * in darts he could be really powerfull
halflings - are not bad but i think not the best thiefs for backstabing with 17str only
dual human fighterx/thief - you will get back your *** in weapon but lose every * you put as thief when your fighter is inactive so it is good to wait with leveling or add in * other weapons.
quartertstaff - is pretty good being +3 not that many +3 weapons in the game and being 2handed you can add +2 in 2hand weapons style
i don't know if you can get that many * in bg:ee and dualclassing my not be the best in terms of fluent play you play half game as assasin and half as not assasin/fighter
for fluent play with darts /quarter staff
just elf fighter/thief with darts quarterstaff and 2handed weapon style could be nice not as powerfull as assasin/fighter dual but still pretty good
In any case, you get -2 AC, +1 damage & hit, can max out find traps. Put your first two points as a thief into something except darts, put two points in daggers since you can throw those too.
When you dual to fighter, you can put your four starting points into darts, unlike when you start a lvl 1 fighter, and get grandmastery rather early (lvl 3 fighter). You'll have 4 APR and have the added bonus damage from grandmastery. Darts don't get any + damage from strength, so the +5 from GM and the swashbuckler dmg is nice as well. Also, you can have 5 APR with haste (or 9/2 after fighter level 7).
On another note, A thief -> fighter dual with GM in axes is absolutely brutal since you can melee AND start throwing at 3 APR once you get the Throwing axe +2 with full plate, shield, ETC. Which is something an Archer can't do.
It remains to be seen whether it’s a bug or an intended behavior, though (see http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/16365/halflings-get-1-thac0-racial-bonus-with-darts, http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/18315/halfling-thac0-bonus).
Taking into account the desire to hide in shadows as much as possible and to have a decent APR, it may seem the best to take a halfling and make him a multiclass fighter/thief.
As a Halfling he has 20 points in Hide in Shadows and 20 in Move Silently as starting thieving skills. His 19 DEX gives him another 15 points in both Hide in Shadows and Move Silently skills. With the Tome it will become 20 DEX giving additional 3 points in both Hide in Shadows and Move Silently skills. With Kiel’s Buckler (can be combined well with darts) it will become 21 DEX giving additional 2 points in both Hide in Shadows and Move Silently skills.
Due to having 19 DEX he’ll have +3 missile THACO bonus. With the Tome and Kiel’s Buckler he’ll have 21 DEX and another +1 (to make it +4) missile THACO bonus.
Due to being a fighter he’ll have a good base THACO (19 at the 2nd level, 18 at the 3rd, 17 at the 4th, 16 at the 5th, 15 at the 6th and 14 at the 7th). If you combine it with his innate bonuses you’ll see he rarely misses his targets.
He’ll be able to put 2 pips into darts from the very start giving him +0.5 APR and in the same time because of a multiclass, he’ll be able to use his thieving abilities.
Due to being a fighter he’ll have +0.5 APR at the the 7th level while still developing his thieving abilities.
In fact, a fighter/thief multiclass is one of the most balanced combinations in the entire game, it’s fun to play this character no matter what chapter is now.
He never stops developing in his both classes. And in late SoA (ToB) he’ll get his HLAs both as a fighter and as a thief.
You won’t need to wait any time before his abilities are back (in the contrast to dual-classing), he’ll have MUCH more thieving points than a human. Because he’s a halfling, he’ll have additional saving throws (his race saving throws + saving throws based on CON) so he’ll be able to survive much more magic and wands thrown at him.
The downside of starting with 17 STR is not so big because STR has no meaning while using darts.
Another downside is his inability to get 5 pips in a weapon but reaching grand-mastery while in BG:EE can be considered unjust anyway (a hole in the engine) and in BG2 his thieving abilities more than compensate for it (BTW in BG2 you’ll find many strength-enhancing items so his STR won’t be a problem at all).
So, for me, a halfling multiclass fighter/thief is the best variant.
