Refreshing "new" pure roleplaying style for Baldur's Gate

Hi, I wanted to share this "Let's Play" series by a guy I've discovered on YouTube who goes by the name "Mynameisnotlilly". He plays a female character named "Lilly Black" all the way from BG1, through BG2, and Neverwinter Nights 1.

(Long review, then link.)

When he starts out in BG, he barely knows what he is doing, but if you skip ahead and watch some of his NWN videos, he becomes the most masterful roleplayer I've ever seen.

I've watched the first 100 episodes of BG, and about the first 50 episodes of Neverwinter Nights.

Right from the character creation screen in BG, the powergamer in me starts wanting to scream through the screen at him as he chooses stats for Lilly that give her absolutely no stat bonuses (gasp). He makes her a generalist mage (gasp). He explains her character, and then he absolutely sticks to that character through the whole series, even when the haughty, self-absorbed, and rude Lilly Black keeps shooting herself in the foot by giving "none of your business" dialogue answers, and getting penalized over, and over, and over. "She" misses quest after quest, and, here's the fun part - she doesn't care.

The powergamer in me wants to scream at Mynameisnotlilly again and again as he steadfastly refuses to take a hint from Jaheira and Khalid to go to Nashkel, and then when he steadfastly refuses to raise Khalid from the dead over about 25 episodes, (Lilly doesn't like men in her party), instead becoming obsessed with defeating Zargol and then Bassilus with his first-level three-woman party.

And I yell out loud and gnash my teeth while he consistently forgets to put helmets on his frontline fighters, getting them critical hit to death again and again, and musing into the microphone, 'Hmm, ha ha, I guess I wasn't paying attention - their armor doesn't seem to be doing them much good."

Yet, he takes a minimal reload approach, accepts the consequences of all the "mistakes", and plays forward with surprisingly few reloads.

And then, all of sudden, I find myself cheering aloud as he begins to figure out the game - like when he finally finds the Beregost Temple after three episodes of wandering around Beregost, or when he finally figures out that Jaheira can use a club for the same damage as a quarter staff, and then use a shield, and, oh yeah, she can wear heavy armor, and maybe it'd be a good idea if she put on a helmet.

I am finding this so refreshing and fun. Watching the tale of Lilly Black as she rises from petulant, ineffective girl to the goddess "Lady of Murder", then falls from deity and has to take a lowly job as an instructor at the Neverwinter Academy, (oh, the humiliation!), is inspiring me to start thinking about a new roleplaying alter ego for myself that I can roleplay over several video games. I've gotten into a rut, always trying to play myself in games, and doing what *I* would do.

@ZanathKariashi, you should like this, because he follows the style you advocate. @Quartz, I think you'd like it too, because it's vanilla BG1. There aren't even any labels over enemies, like "badly wounded" or "near death", to tell you how close enemies are to dropping.

Thank you if you've borne with me this far. Here's a link to the first series.

I discovered Lily recently and it is by far the best "Let's play" i've ever seen.
Because, like you said, it is pure roleplaying and doesn't care about all the powergaming stuff we so often pursue without even thinking about it.
I'm also trying to figure a roleplaying character like this for my next BG session, but i'm still unsure of what to do.

Tord's playthrough is well known within the BG community. His Let's Play approach was really refreshing back then and subsequently spawned many RP LP'ers. I think a lot of his popularity goes back to his calm, "story-telling" voice. Otherwise, how could one sit-through a 10 minute sequence of inventory management?

Yeah this guy is amazing. He's inspired me to do something similar at some stage. Though sadly I don't quite have his imagination or share his awesome voice lol.

I've seen episodes of this. My problem is that I can't really watch LPs with voiceovers. Seems like a good series, though.

@VikingR, I'm seeing that nickname "Tord" or "LordTord" coming up in YouTube comments. Can you tell me where that comes from?

Actually, I am influenced from Mynameisnotlilly in terms of approaching the game. And I absolutely love his Let's plays series.

Powergamer? Hah! I left my boring powergaming long ago. I am... a roleplayer now.

@ZelgadisGW, you know, I think I meant to tag you in my initial post, instead of @ZanathKariashi. My apologies to the both of you for my mixup. I must have gotten confused about which one of you I had been reading lately around the forums advocating playing BG as a pure roleplaying game rather than powergaming it.

So, @ZelgadisGW, I'm glad you saw and responded. Getting into Mynameisnotlilly's LP's made me think of you.

Technically correct as well. WHile I generally don't come right out and say it, I do think that roleplaying playthroughs is the best way to do it. (Though it's difficult to completely remove meta-knowledge, which is why I generally prefer to tell people not to look up advice, read guides, etc etc, for their first playthrough....because you really only get one chance for the full effect...and after that, the magic fades a little with each progressive playthrough and how limited and restrictive the game really is starts becoming more readily apparent).

My biggest concerns at the moment however, are properly implementing as much PnP as possible, so that all possible options for a roleplay run will be there (being able to just charm people into giving you the information you need and avoiding combat entirely? Doesn't happen....hell there's really only one quest in the whole saga that has that as a hidden option, with no hints you can do it, since it requires meta knowledge of an obscure mechanic). It's do-able now, to an extent, but it could be SO much more.

People say RP is so much fun. Its a shame I cant really experience it much, being a hardcore powergamer by nature. Doing the whole RP thing makes me want to bash my head in, I just cant. "A warrior WITHOUT 18 str dex and con? Are you insane?" is what my brain tells me in a nutshell.

But im starting to get there. I used that randomizer to make a character, and got a gone pure class Kensai, and I realised it was a lot of fun so now I'm doing a run with a Wise Dwarf Pureclass swashbuckler. But even with it when the game begins I cant stop myself from hardcore powergaming.

    Shin said:

@Fubby Powergaming and RP don't have to be mutually exclusive though - it's not like you have to play a quirky character with crappy stats who makes oddball decisions throughout the game in order to claim you're roleplaying.

I suppose thats true, it just sounds like that would sort of flesh out the game and make me feel like I am actually my character. If I try to do anything that remotely involves Roleplaying over power gaming past the char creation my brain will scream at me until I start powergaming again.

For some reason, I am really curious as to if your username is based on the Greek Philosopher, or a character from the Avernum series. lol

Also, on a related note... can somebody tell me what this forum's policy is on advertising your own 'Let's Play'? I see people post flavoured AARs, but I know some forums frown upon any self-publicity.

I have been quite inspired by mynameisnotlily, but it seems pointless to start my own Let's Play if I'd just end up talking to myself lol.

I also followed his videos, quite entertaining, even if sometimes I wanted to scream "No, don't do that..."
I really can't see myself following a similar approach, too power-gamerish. But I can always try to force myself to play a 75-roll character and try to take it easy...but with SCSII installed of course.
  • EdwinEdwin Member Posts: 480
I love this RP approach. While power gaming with SCSII installed can be a different and fun (though often frustrating) experience, Jacking up the difficulty is not really necessary...

Just give the weaker NPC's a shot in an interesting party.... and don't Shadowkeep a monster PC or re-roll until you are brimming with 18's...viola...more difficult..no uber difficulty mods needed.

@Fubby - try this challenge out if you are a powergamer at heart - http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/15828/the-75-roll-no-reload-no-resurrection-challenge/p1 you use minimal stats for your character. If the no-reload part of the challenge is too much for you or not appealing/fun, just do minimal reload instead. I've done few attempts at this and it was the most fun I ever had playing BG.

Btw, my thanks to @Daven for tipping me off about Tord in another thread.
  • davendaven Member Posts: 112
Haha good to hear you've been enjoying it. Just really sad that he never got to finish the NWN one's. There's a lot of great Forgotten Realms and DnD lore he puts in and that. I'm actually tempted to re-watch em now...

If you liked mynameisnotlilly then you should try veriax's LP :)

@SpaceInvader, thanks, I'll look at veriax after I finally get done with Tord's D&D stuff.

    You can! :) In here:

Huh... that was odd, I dunno why but I never got an alert that u had me in this reply.

The reason that I thought publicising a youtube series might be banned here is cos that'd be an external link, as opposed to just using the forum to narrate an AAR.

I think as long as you're not actively seeking payment for the series, it's probably okay to link to it here.

@Sylvus_Moonbow, thanks, I watched it. It's nice to put a face with the name, and his art is cool. I'm still wishing someone could tell me where the name "Tord" comes from. I'm coming to his party about three years late. Also, I see in old comments that he often identifies commenters by a name other than the handle that shows up on YouTube, which intrigues me.

How do all the Let's Players know each other? Is there a special external site or something, or some section of YouTube that I haven't subscribed to or found?

Loved this LP. Easily my favourite BG LP I've seen. As much as I love and appreciate BGT, Tutu, and EE, I still usually stick with Vanilla. So watching this LP had an even more added bonus that it was using the Vanilla BG1 gameplay.

I don't know if it's his name, but Tord is a proper name in Sweden, and perhaps other parts of Scandinavia.

Edit: ninja-ed by over an hour. Go me!
