The plot exposition is *terrible.*
Specifically, chapter 6. Your lineage is explained to you in a letter that is easily missable, and that in fact is impossible to get if you choose to kill the primary antagonists of the game at that point. Like, why could they not have just had Tethoril come to you in prison and say "Oh, hey man, Gorion left you this letter" if it wasn't already in your inventory. That seems like a really easy fix.

I also missed the letter (and tons of quest and content) in my first run, back in 2000. I was so into the main quest, the atmosphere of chapters 6 and 7, the sense of danger, the need to hurry, the urge to hunt down sarevok... I guess that's what makes BG special.
And even if you read the letter, nothing happens. No commentary from your npc friends, no real ingame result. Whereas in bg2
