The level of effort team members are putting in

Hey everyone. I wanted to drop a post here about the bug reports I was reviewing this morning. I was looking through a User Interface bug report and was blown away by the concise nature, level of detail and attention put into the report. I screen grabbed part of the bug to share it with everyone.
Nice work on this Alex. Looking forward to how far Mad can push the quality of the fixes.
I'm very excited by the level of quality we are aiming for.

Thanks for sharing. I know you guys must be working really hard on this and the BG EE patch. This level of attention to detail is truly quite amazing.

That said, I really hope this sort of aesthetic perfectionism is being done on top of ensuring BG 2 EE will be stable and free of bugs on release as much as possible, with strong, compelling, meaningful and complete content for the four new NPCs! That's what really matters to me, and I am not sharp-eyed enough to notice minor things like the above anyway, lol

    Impressive for sure.

But i have to agree with Heindrich. Even though it's really good to see you're really serious about it, i'm wondering sometimes if you know what has to be done and when.

I mean, your passionate fans are waiting for the patch for six months now, because some quests or kits or gameplay things are broken. You still can't release the patch, but you have time to treat bug reports for the size and smoothness of the interface's buttons ? Sorry, but it feels strange to me.

In the end all these details put together will really make the difference for sure. But for 2013, i don't know, maybe you have some more important stuff to do, like releasing a patch for all the broken things like i said earlier, or make sure Bg2ee is as much bug-free as possible on release. And by "bugs" i don't mean the size and colors of buttons.

    Thanks for listening.

It's worth noting that though Overhaul/Beamdog has a small team, there are people focused on the BG:EE patch as well as people focused on BG2:EE polishing.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the visual design folks and the game stability folks are not the same people, and cannot be the same people because those jobs require vastly different skillsets. Remember, a development team is not a completely fluid set of resources that can be assigned in whatever pattern you want. Each person on the team as a certain skillset, and will only work anywhere near peak efficiency when assigned a job relating closely to that skillset. So basically, what I'm trying to say is that it seems very unlikely to be that menu UI work would be interfering with things like bugfixing.

This presumes, of course, that the new in-game UI is finished, at least from a visual design standpoint. Which, given that we've seen screenshots of it, is probably a fair bet.

This is going to look great, isn't it? I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished product!

When BGII:EE comes out and people complain about the GUI, we'll point them here :D
And yeah, our GUI artist has nothing to do on BG:EE any more, so she can as well polish BGII.

And she managed to trick you into believing that ?
Man, she must be quite fed up with the GUI ! ( :D )

Whenever I see this sort of comment I always end up laughing at how much people don't understand software development.

A software development team is made up of multiple individuals with their own skills sets, some focus on coding, some on art/GUI, some on... well you get the idea. In some cases there may be some skill crossover, but a lot of the time there isn't. In most cases you really don't want the guy who does the artwork mucking around in the backend code when he has no experience of doing so. That's just asking for trouble...

For a simple, real life comparison, Would you want your Hairdresser/barber fixing your plumbing, and conversely, would you want your plumber trying to cut your hair?

Glad to see Trent's not dead in a ditch filled with coffee and tear stained hankerchiefs.

Everyone here's anxious to see what the result of all this is going to be, we wish you all nothing but the best and good luck!

Well i'm sorry if i'm not understanding anything about how software development is supposed to work.
And i don't mean to be rude to anyone on the team.

But if you have time to resize things like the buttons of the start screen of BG2EE, why didn't you fix first the bottom menu buttons on BGEE ?
I don't see how your GUI artist never reported the two big holes that menu now has in Enhanced Edition. This menu is used everytime and i mean, you can't miss the holes.

Just compare the bottom menu on BG vanilla :

    and BGEE's one :

I may be just a little man that doesn't understand nothing of software development, but I believe that defining priorities is important in any field.

For a simple, real life comparison, Would you want your Hairdresser/barber fixing your plumbing, and conversely, would you want your plumber trying to cut your hair?

Of course not, but if your hair are perfect and your plumbing is a mess doesn't that mean that you hired too many hairdressers and not enough plumbers?

Those two holes are there for a reason, @Palanthis. Notice that each of those buttons is mapped to one of the F keys at the top of your keyboard; on most standard keyboards, those buttons are split into three groups of 4.

The gaps in the UI are there so that you know, at a glance, which F-key to press to activate a given action.

I use the F keys, but I've never noticed that the gaps in the GUI correspond to the gaps on the keyboard.

people are really going to be impressed when they see how many bugs i've added

Not sure if joke or freudian slip.

They're not bugs. They're 'features'. Characters are supposed to sometimes randomly walk through walls, it's a design 'feature'.
