The problem with the Axe of Unyielding is that there's a save (albeit with a -4 penalty) against its vorpal effect
It is a 10% chance per hit to save at -4 or die.
I have it as minsk's primary weapon with belm as secondary. He is sadly not a fighter and limited to specializing, and as such he gets "only" 5 APR before I cast any buffs on him.
As has been pointed out Carsomyr has several strengths, but the main one (especially in a game modded for some difficulty) is indeed the dispel on hit. It's a dispel that bypasses spell-level based immunities and likely also spell immunity: abjuration, that can be applied several times per round indefinitely. It's an effect rather unique to Carsomyr that, while not invincible, turns many encounters trivial and makes it not all that far from an anti-caster type shield of Balduran.
I think one of the main benefits of Carsomyr is that you can get is very early on. At that point in the game the only other comparable weapon is FoA +3 (which is even easier to get).
And simply for the weapon stats Carsomyr is a very good weapon - very good damage even if it's ultimately not the best. Plus it's particularly awesome for fighting spellcasters who tend to be the toughest opponents.
And for all the talk of FoA + speed offhand being supreme, well there's only one FoA in the game. So unless your party only has one melee fighter, the rest of them are going to have to make do with something else. Carsomyr is an excellent substitute if you have a paladin.
@karnor00: that is very true. Carsomyr is ridiculously easy to get for its power; more so in the unmodded game, but even the strongly modded Firkraag is not an insurmountable challenge for a mid level party in Chapter 2.
