Beholders (how to deal with them)

Im in the underdark and in the beholder area. I have a pack of 3 beholders and 2 ghasts together... any sound strategies to defeat them without killing half my team?

No shield of balduran.
Lvl 15 average.

    Im trying to avoid cheese...

What are your standards for cheese? If you're not strong enough to buff up and kill them, you're going to have to do something...

the problem is being 5 they kill me pretty fast. I want to avoid cloak of mirror and shield of balduran, also cheese trying to separate them. maybe im not high lvl enough?

summon monsters should work. I believe each beholder has only 1 death ray, so after they use those up, they are prime for slaughter by hasted summoned monsters.

I'm not so sure about the death ray... but still, in vanilla BG2 summons are probably your best bet.

5 skeleton warriors with bless/chant/haste/strength of one should do the trick.. or will at the very least thin them out enough so that the rest of the party can tackle them. Send in a summoned demon or two once the skeleton warriors get knocked off.

A few hasted skeleton warriors should do the trick due to their magic resistance. If you have the Golem Manual, it's great for the same reason.

Potion of Magic Shielding--all saving throws are made automatically. That isn't literally true, of course, but it does add 20 to your roll so the disintegrations and/or petrifications will fail.

I say take off and fireball the entire site from a distance. It's the only way to be sure.

Generally, summoning fire/air elementals and sending them in by themselves can be really useful.

Death ray bypasses magic resistance. I know because the hive mother (fight before demogorgon) uses a death ray on my shield of balduran character, got reflected and failed her save. I was NOT impressed.

I always find poking them in the eye always floors 'em.

Get your long quarterstaff and poke away until blind. Poke, poke, poke.

I asked a similar question in this thread. People offered plenty of advice... but I don't think Beholders ever become 'easy' unless you use the shield...

    http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/20266/getting-owned-by-beholders

One thing I have found is that concentrated firepower tends to be more effective than trying to get stuck in with melee. For example I have Charname F/M with Celestial Fury and Anomen with Flail of Ages, but if I try to charge into a group of Beholders, they tend to get chewed up by a barrage of spells before they close the gap. So I have had more success just equipping everyone with ranged weapons or spells and take on the Beholders in a shooting war, even though I have no decent ranged weapons. I guess shooting allows a concentration of fire that just isn't possible with melee. Also charging forwards leaves your warriors in serious trouble if they get disabled in some way.

So using strategy to win is cheese?

I used the cloak of mirroring to kill most of them but some of my party members did get hit by some eye rays along the way, and they are pretty dangerous.

I would suggest using summons if possible and focus fire with ranged weapons. I had an "Archer" who is pretty awesome against beholders iirc. Even if you don't use a potion of magic blocking you can use other potions like invulnerability which gives a saving throw bonus as well. I think protection from petrification works too.

If you are having trouble you might just have to rest and heal up after every fight...

Considering there's no in-game reason for them to split up and let themselves be slaughtered one by one, yeah, that "strategy" is cheese.

"Hey, Bob, do you hear something over that way?"
"I dunno, Greg. I'll go and see."
    [10 minutes pass]
"Hey, Greg, do you hear something from over the way Bob went and never came back?"
"I dunno, Phil. I'll go and see."

Holy smite works well against them. IF you happen to have a good party (Which face it you should!). That's the best way I can think of to hit them all and not take friendly damage.

I smell the scent of denial and corruptibility.
