Confusion regarding EEKeeper and custom portraits.

Hello! In summary the problem is, in game, Imoen's small thumbnail portrait is really low-res compared to my player character's one.
Here's what I've done so far.. The other day I looked up the custom portrait sizes on here and made a bunch of small, medium and large portraits.
for convenience let's call them:
forplayerL, forplayerM, forplayerS and forimoenL, forimoenM and forimoenS. (they weren't actually these, they were within the seven character limit.. this is just for ease ^^) the large were 210x330, medium were 169x266 and small were 54x84.
Now I started a new game, selected my forplayerM for the large one - and as should have happened, it automatically re-sized it nicely to fit in the small portrait. So I didn't in fact have to click on my forplayerL or forplayerS at all. I only ever clicked on my forplayerM. That all went great and my portrait appears ace in game.
Hooowever, when I picked up Imoen, I wanted to change her portrait. So I loaded up EEKeeper and gave her forimoenS as her small one, and forimoenM as her large one - The problem is, in game, Imoen's small portrait looks very low resolution compared to my player characters. Imoen's portrait on her character page is absolutely fine and detailed, it's just her thumbnail portrait to the right it looks all blurry in comparison.
Strangely, in EEKeeper, when I click on my PLAYER character's portrait, the large one is forplayerM.. but there is nothing selected for the small portrait (and it's got a blank picture). I'm guessing because this is because BGEE 're-sized' the portraitM for the small portrait, but isn't there any way to do this for the npcs?
In EEKeeper it wont let me select any other size other than a '......S' for the small portraits. I was hoping that if I 'shoved' a medium in there it might resize it again, but I think only the S ones appear in that list.
So then I read I don't even have to use a game editor (d'oh!) and you can change npc's portraits by re-naming them to (for e.g.) IMOENS, IMOENL... so I changed the file names from - to:
forimoenS.bmp - IMOENS.bmp
forimoenM.bmp - IMOENM.bmp
forimoenL.bmp - IMOENL.bmp
aaand now in game, Imoen's small portrait is still shoddy low res. But now her character screen portrait is blank o.O
I'm so confused! I just want all my thumbnail portraits the same, um, resolution :S
again I'm so sorry for writing so much for such a small problem, I find it hard to explain stuff >.< but any help would be really appreciated!

To change a portrait for the player or other character (this only applies if you specifically want to change the non-protagonist character's portrait to something other than the original name, otherwise use the method listed above), place the desired portraits into the portraits folder in the Documents directory and then use EE Keeper to change them.
Basic steps:
Load game. Click on the button under the character's portrait, labelled "Change Portrait."
Select new portraits. Note that you can have mismatched portraits, but it is not advisable.
Press OK once you are finished and then press the save button.
Save the game under whatever name you want.
See the changes in-game.
As of latest patch for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, it now resizes just one portrait unless multiple portraits are selected. The small portraits are lower resolution, there's really nothing than can be done about them.
