Seriously, bg2 ee only in english?

I just started bg2 ee and iam very disappointed. There was no option to change the language. Then i checked the directory and there was no other lang data then eng_US.

You had one job. To make an existing game better than it was BEFORE.

I am dissapointed.

    It's a shame

There was no source code for other languages though. Do you really think they were going to bother to convert every dialogue line to other languages?

The translation is bei g done by volunteers and as you may notice there are tons of lines in Bg2 and TOB so it takes time. Be patient the translation will arrive.

The spanish translation (for example) was made 10 years ago in the BG2 SPANISH VERSION.
I don't know how many lines have been but this is no excuse for Beamdog that don't say nothing until yesterday. Poor professionals.

Both games, Baldurs Gate II and Throne of Bhaal have been initially released at least in german and spanish language.

Since the team is not allowed to change the content of the game, the dialogs also havent changed.

There has been at least 4 months for translating the content provided by beamdog.

now obviously i cannot speak fact for the team as i dont know so this is purely speculation:

not including mandarin english is the most spoken language in the world. so of course they are going to do english first, as for the spanish and german versions *shrugs* maybe they dont have them / dont have the right to use them so that means translations have to be done the the volunteers

also in an interview with PC gamer they talk about having to go through the source dialogue and baldur's gate had nearly a million words, and im sure thats BEFORE tales of the sword cost and BEFORE the new content. how many words of dialogue is in BG2:EE? before ToB and new content? i know these games well...its alot.

Given that they're charging a premium price for this game (it costs twice as much as BG2 on Gog.com), I think it's expected that it have as many language options as the original. While English is my first language, I have to empathize with those who wish to play the game in other languages.

All due respect for Beamdog’s mission, but they delivered the German translation for BG1 EE about a year after the release. Why did you expect all translations for BG2 EE at day one?

They will come, now that Beamdog obviously managed to adress all engine issues in the patch and the new game, the translations won’t take as long as the EE1 translations did.

A professional translator can normally translate about 2,000-3,000 words per day. That's in a full working day, not as a hobby besides working a full-time job or studying for a degree.

You don't translate something like BG:EE or BG2:EE overnight. If you do a rush job, users will prefer the original English version over the localized versions because it is easier to understand for them. ;-)

They were allowed to correct bugs right ? They are also allowed to correct dialog mistakes.
Also the new content has not been set in stone for the past 4 months, they were lots of changes and adjustments.

Seriously they still need to translate new content. Don't worry I am sure it will be fast because of the old translations. I would rather worry about some of the major bugs

Unfortunately, I don't think Baldur's Gate is really popular enough in a mainstream sense for a small company to invest a huge amount of resources in providing translations for perhaps only a few thousand users for certain languages. That said, I imagine Spanish and French are probably the 2nd and 3rd most popular languages for these games.

I have to say though, as a bilingual myself (Mandarin and English), I tend to prefer playing games and/or watching movies/TV in their native language as much as possible. Translations always lose something... Perhaps European languages are more compatible, but let's just say that movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, was quite a different experience for me compared to my English friends, and Lord of the Rings was a very different experience for my Chinese friends who read the Chinese translation of the novels, which frankly was really weird for me.

They did make it better than before. The interface is vastly improved, it has excellent widescreen performance, and there are new items, kits, and HLAs.

This is always advisable, but as it stands continental Europe (outside of scandinavia and the netherlands, to generalise) is plagued by limited english skills. And when a localized version exists, people come to get used to it and depend on it, and eventually view it as the "proper" version. It's a bit like how some germans feel the german Tom Cruise dubbing voice actor does a more suitable voice than the actual Tom Cruise.

As a French I find myself both agreeing and disagreeing with you @Shin . On one hand there are europeans who speak a very good english (and contrary to a lot of native english speakers we also speak others languages). On the other hand I have to be realistic, most of my fellow French suck at speaking english, even among the more educated ones, I work in academia/ research and hearing French speakers give a talk in english is often plain hilarious.

I think after got a bad news about the game is not translated to other languages yesterday, in the last moment, the minimum we deserve is someone tell us "when?" "when we will be able to play in our language?" I'm not talking about answers like "coming soon" "over the next year" "still are in beta" etc. We need a clear answer. An answer like "1 month" or "2 months" or "6 months" or "1 year".

I don't think we ask too much considering we already have paid. Personally I don't want the same problem which is happening to BG:EE for iPad: One year later, still no translation

I'll give you the only answer that is reasonable: When it's done.

Our translators are volunteers, and they're great at what they do, but at the end of the day they have their own lives, and they have to sleep occasionally. The translations are being done, steadily, led by some of the most dedicated people I've ever seen on the internet, and as soon as the translations are ready, they will be made available.

So I can't give you a time-frame, because in the most real sense of it, life happens. You get sick, you get in an accident, you get a new job that takes more time out of your day, you move to a new city, you get married, you have children, you lose a loved one, you lose your job, you lose your home, you lose your access to the internet, you lose interest, you lose hope. Any one of those things could happen, to anyone on any of the translation teams. And when that Life happens, you have to take care of it, and just know that the translation will be waiting for you when you get back.

The great thing about our teams is that they always do come back. So be patient. The translations will be done when they're done. Hopefully fairly soon.

    "When its done"

Ok, installing BGT again. THIS SUCKS realy. I defended the EE Version of BG1 heavily out there... well, this was a mistiake.
  • PeccaPecca Member Posts: 2,215
You can ask translators on this forum to provide you with the translation they have done so far. This happened on the czech forum and people can play with translated basic content which was already done 10 years ago. Obviously the new content will take time.

yes blame the developers for the volunteer work. you can blame developers for bugs and stuff, but they are not behind the translation. it has been stated time and time again.

How dare they sleep. The absolute gall. The brass nerve. That's like saying programmers are allowed to sleep, and we all know they don't. They're kept in tiny cages and fed through a tube that delivers caffeine and protein doses periodically—occasionally they might be allowed a treat, such as a pizza, but only if they've been good. Whenever one looks like they might be dozing off, they're given a prod with something sharp, usually a pen or pointed stick.
Frankly, this lazy attitude is why China is catching up to the decadent West. We do not tolerate this sleep non-sense.

Original BG2 had many languages... I dont understand why now there's only english whereas files are already here in BG2. They didn't re-write the whole game, they only add quests/characters. Ok I can wait for volunteers to translate the new content but the main game ?!!!??? why they didn't use original files ?

As someone who typed up a (roughly) 24,000 word NPC guide I can't imagine translating (or even correcting the translation of) anything near a million words (or in this case even larger).
