Broken Weapons?

While waiting for the launcher to work for BG2EE, I'm running through Durlag's Tower and finding a lot of broken weapons in chests, etc. Are these random adds? Random breaking of normal or magical weapons? What's the deal?

*bump* Doing another play through and, again, finding a lot of broken weapons in containers in Durlag's Tower. I know this happens in BG2EE, too. Does anyone know if it's just the normal trash weapons or do magical weapons have a chance to break, too? What is that chance?

Edit: I suppose it might be explosions hitting the containers, but I rarely use area effect spells. Perhaps I set off a fireball trap or two or something, though. Any help on this is greatly appreciated, as I hope I'm not missing out on a lot of good loot.

I'm not aware of this. Are you running any mods? Where specifically in Durlag's have you found these broken weapons?

Thanks for the reply. I'm not running any mods this time. I've found four Broken Weapons in containers in the first dungeon level. The more I think about it, the more it seems likely that I set off a fireball trap, as three of the containers are close to each other. I don't remember this happening any other time in the play through, though it's possible.

I know it happens in BG2EE, too, specifically on one of the tables in the room with the duegar (sp) with the acorn. I've seen a lot of Broken Weapons from that table in multiple games. That is one of the rare occasions I use the fireball spell, so it may very well be explosions hitting the containers. In BG2EE, I'm fairly certain that it would only be a normal weapon, not magical. I'm not that familiar with Durlag's Tower, though, so can't be sure.

Yup, I also keep finding broken pieces of weapons, but never all the bits in one place (as you do when your weapons break in the early chapters), so I religiously carry a pack full of scrap iron around with me in the vain hope that I'll find a forge somewhere. No mods btw.

Isn't there a part in Durlag's where you use a forge to put something together?

Actually, you don't name a crisis as the Iron Crisis for nothing.

You assemble the gong in Durlags using a forge and the Flail of Ages at the forge in the Keep.

There are a few broken weapons in Durlogs. I just ran through it last night and found a bunch. As far as I know, they've always been there and has nothing to do with the fireball trap by the door. (Im assuming you mean the wardrobe type container near the slimes. ive found one there numerous times.)

While we're on the subject of broken weapons, why is it that the Red Wizard barbarians that you beat in Adoy's Enclave always drop a broken weapon?

They are furious as the prospect of you killing them, so shortly before you deliver the final blow they use their great strength to break their spears/long swords to deny you the chance of using them. :p
