Anyone find a use for Dings, Mechanical Bird, ect?

I've been playing primarily with the new party members up until this point, but they keep handing me completely random items with no actual efffects. My inventory OCD is going crazy.

Can I safely store:

Dings (the cat)
Dragomirs respite (I just reload if anyone dies, I dont even know what it does)
Mechanical bird
Lamp of oil (from the tomb quest, you never use it though)
Gold statue (same deal, tomb)
Piece of silk (tomb)
Journal of fadell ironeye (I think i looted this in the tomb too)
Iron rod

I don't want to miss out on some kind of party interaction based on these, but i dont want to keep wandering around with them either. Any idea what any of these are worth?

I can helpfully tell you that the tomb items like lamp oil etc. are only useful in the tomb. If you have don't the tomb you don't need them any more.

I'd hold on to the bird...

Dragomir's Respite basically makes Hexxat invincible. If she dies and you rest, it'll resurrect her automatically.

    Never got Dings.

The mechanical bird, never found a use. Although Neera does mention it in ToB, didn't seem to do anything.

    The rest are all trash.

I am sure there is something to the tomb items. Some combination of them.
One of the books mentions one of the items.

The tomb items are only useful within the tomb. :)

    What about Dings?
I gave it back.... Did I do wrong?

Isn't Dings a person, not a cat? I could be confused.

Also, the cilinder taken back to exit the first hexxat's tomb can be dropped?

It would have been good to be able to sell those items. Specially the gold statue. Come on, I managed to carry that super heavy thing outside of the dungeon to the closest shop and I was specting to sell some huge gold statue by some thousands. It didn't worth the effort.

Bird.. what is it for? for now it only takes 1 of the ever not-so-many inventory slots which is annoying. p_p
  • The Journal of Fadell Ironeye is actually from Neera's quest, but is likewise tossable once you're done with that.

Dragomir's Respite acts as a bag of holding, so it is storage itself.

I haven't gotten far enough into Neera's romance yet, but I imagine the bird should be kept around "for sentimental value." Unlike the locket you get for Jaheira, who never notices if you turn around and pawn it at the next opportunity...

Hrm... nah if i store it somewhere i'll probably forget it later... sigh~ bg needs bigger bags <~>_<~>
I can't believe i carry 4 gem bags and 3 scrolls bags... and want even more bags for all the junk i picked... which i temporarily store in some peasants house hoping i wont forget it later on xO

If you consider tossing into severs of Athkatla as a good use, i think i found one.

Why would you store dragomir's respite when it's a bag of holding??? You can put tons of stuff in it, kinda makes me consider hexxat vital to get even in future pure good play throughs...

So basically nobody found any use of:
    Dings (the cat)
Lamp of oil (from the tomb)
    Piece of silk (tomb)
    ?

@Ferozban: The stuff from the tomb is usable within the tomb. You can solve the quest without it, though.

The game sorely lacks loose ends, clues that lead to nothing and stuff that doesn't fit. It's slightly paranoid to think that essentially *everything* in the game is meaningful. Think back to the old Ultima games. The world of U4 and U5 still hasn't been topped, despite all the technology.

I have finished Barad Ding's Eight cats quest, but I don't get Dings the cat as a reward. I only get the collar. Did I do something wrong with the quest? I first returned 5, then 3. In between I have asked Barad for more food....

If you have the Mechanical Bird Neera gave you at the end of her Shadows of Amn questline (and Neera
is in your party) you'll see a 'Strange Collector' at ZAKEE'S TAVERN in Amkethran. If you approach, he'll initiate dialogue, marvelling at your wonderful bird. He's a collector, see, and you know how
collectors are about stuff... anyways, he's willing to pay you a whopping 100,000 gold for your bird.

If you sell it, Neera will express regret-that you sold the gift she gave you, for one, and that she didn't make more of those birds. No kidding.

If you refuse to sell, you'll make Neera happy and your protagonist will gain 100,000 experience points. Either way, if you held onto that Mechanical Bird, you stand to gain big-time.

Ding will ask you if you want to keep a cat after finishing the quest. You probably skip the dialogue too quickly.
  • I could be wrong, but I think Barad Ding will only offer you a cat if your PC is a mage (including dual/multiclass).

I'm not certain of the criteria, but yes, Ding sometimes offers to let you keep a cat and sometimes doesn't. Perhaps it has something to do with having Mage levels, as you say ... or rather any sort of Wizard levels, since I've definitely also been offered Dings with a Sorcerer protagonist. Can someone else confirm the exact rule for this?

Whatever the criteria, when I've taken the cat I've never yet found any use for it. Is it confirmed that Dings is just a decorative Easter Egg, or is there some use which we've all been missing?

    [Edit: spelling.]

@Gallowglass I cannot confirm the criterion/a but I have been through the quest quite a few times which excludes the "pass the dialogue too quickly" thing, but never with a Mage/Sorc PC, and Ding have never offered me to keep a cat, though he does speak about his cat Dings sneaking food etc... if you ask him.

Perhaps I can clear this up:

Dings is scripted to be offered only if Charname is of the long_bow class.

*Tresset runs away, very pleased with himself over the bad joke he just made.*

As a I am not a native English speaker I must say I had to read it another two or three times.
    Then I laughed stupidly :)

Played as a sorceror. Was offered the cat. I notice that if you speak to Ding again, you get a chance to give the cat back, which finally completes the quest. Both the cat description, the dialogue and the quest text imply that, given time, Dings will fill your inventory with rat skeletons. I reloaded and kept him. Still no rats caught though - but its been less than 1 hour gametime since.
