I have the exact same problem...AND...Control + Space does NOT open my console, so I can't do a work around (I'm on Windows XP). So...I can't get any further in the game, right?

@Vykers, a fix for this issue was already provided here. If you have both the hand and the gem, you can just extract and copy the linked file to the override folder in the installation directory of the game. After that, just launch the game, load the save game and talk to the statue.

If you would rather one of us do it, then you can zip/rar a save game and upload it.

If you have the console enabled and it does not open press CRTL+M, even if the language is not english.

@Vykers: The issue with the console not opening is likely due to your language set. Ctrl-Space is not being properly trapped on code pages that are not "english" default codepages. There are a few threads out there about this.

Check your windows language settings and do a search on the forum here for how to fix it. The linked "here" thread may help.

I think I can do this...where is the installation directory? I've gone into Program Files/Baldur's Gate...but I don't see an installation directory in any of the folders. Thanks so much for your help and patience.

Yes, I have data, lang, movies and scripts...but no override folder. :(

And I'm not sure I'm adept enough to figure out how to make and send you a zip file.

Just create the override folder, I don't know if the capital letter matters much, my BG:EE has it capitalized but BG2:EE does not.

@Vykers, as CrevsDaak said, just create one. Right-click in that folder and select New->Folder, then rename it to override.

That occurred to me, too. I just wasn't sure it would work. I'll try it now and update y'all! Thanks.

Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle -- it worked! Thanks to all.
