Edit: There is no 'View Results' option for the poll if you do not vote!?
Baldur's Gate 2 has awesome levelling, tons of spells, better interaction, all kinds of epic but at some point it just felt like going down a laundry list of quests.
BG2 was an improvement on so many fronts, but of course there were some disappointments... mainly the lack of "wildernes" areas.
It will be interesting to re-evaluate when BG:EE comes out. BG1 has the charm I think, but there's a definite lack of party banter and romance. Also, the sheer power one can attain in BG2 is very... pleasing :-)
I also liked the broader weapon categories in BG1.
If I absolutely had to separate them and choose one.. probably BG2.
hmm, BG I gives me more nostalgia of my childhood...
I loved BG1 for the well-done plot, the Iron Throne/Sarevok's conspiracy, the dialogs, the NPCs, free roam, the very city of Baldur's Gate, the interface, the colors. You can literally feel the team was fully involved in the development and care of this game!
BG2 is a little lacking in these parts, but greatly compensates with the great quest that (to me) starts as soon as you leave Athkatla for Spellhold (Ust Natha, the Underdark and Suldanesselar were simply brilliant), magic duels, dual wielding, better banters, romances and dragons. Too bad you can't import your BG1 party. Also, I find it a shame that there was little to no involvement of the Bhaalspawn until ToB starts, which we know it was too short for its potential.
Its the same reason I love ToEE (just got to make sure to use the Co8 mod).
On the other hand, BG 2 felt a bit more epic. There were dragons to fight, I could get my own stronghold to use as a base of operations. The world wasn't quite as open but there were more interesting places to track down.
I guess in all the ways that the games are different, they are just good in different ways.
