Playing BG2EE Next Week! Help me choose my character please (+romantic interest:Neera or Rasaad?)

booinyoureyesbooinyoureyes Member Posts: 6,164
Hey. I finally will be done with my semester of school and have a full month and a half off (kinda)! I'm gonna spend much of that time playing my favorite game remade and refurbished.

Here is the thing: I've played through the entire game before as a paladin (twice), ranger and a thief-->fighter. I always had a lot of arcane users, and some clerics and jaheira, but my charname has never been a magic first kind of guy. So I want to try a sorc, a wizard, a bard, a cleric or even a druid (preferably a kit). Also... I've never done evil. Nor a real "neutral". I've gotten far in SoA as evil but never that beat it. I almost always take Minsc, Keldorn and Imoen.

So... wanting to try out the new npcs I decided to go neutral of some sort and completely change it up. I doubt I will take Hexxat but I will try to take Dorn, Neera and Rasaad. I will romance one of them, but I have also never done the Viconia romance, which I here is awesome. So I definitely want one of he four romance options.

I can't decide on a character though. Please help me, and also suggest which romance I should do. I'm now leaning toward Rasaad since I dunno if I can handle Dorn 0.0 and Neera seems like a lot of trouble for the first time through.

Also characters I haven't played much with: Cernd (never had him), Viconia, Haer-Dalis and Korgan

Thanks guys

I'm not sure about which races are romancable otherwise I'd go with the Gnome C/I. However in that case I would go for the Half-Elf c/M instead as I'm fairly sure they are good to go with regards to romance options

No option for a dashing Half-Orc Cleric/Thief sidekick for Dorn? Or a masculine Gnome Fighter/Illusionist lass for Rasaad? Not even a wild Halfling Barbarian slinger to team up with Neera...? I'm in despair! The lack of poll options in this thread has left me in despair!

I didn't even know they could do that multi-class. Thanks!

oooohhh I like the fighter/illusionist idea. Cleric/Thief sounds like a pain since I am horrible at using both of them, but I'll add the illusionist/fighter... i've never played any sort of fighter/mage though a Blade is pretty close I guess

Edit: I'm actually stupid and don't know how to add options to the poll

Bard. Gets you some casting, still good melee ability, pickpocketing is more fun now, and of course: best stronghold (though mage also has a very neat one).

Or you could just leave it up to chance and try the random challenge.

@kidcarnival I was leaning between them and Sorcerer tbh, I dunno if I'm ready to make a druid. I' almost for sure going to suck it up and finally use Cernd to get some experience with them

I want to recommend the dragon disciple but if you don't have much experience with magic you might get stuck with spell picks you don't like. So, mage! The specialist is all right but I just can't get into them because there's always Edwin's looming shadow. As such I'd recommend wild mage but if you don't like the randomness I'd do some kind of easy dual to put a spin on it. Like the rage mage :D Or thief kit>mage to mirror Imoen. I think it's cute to have the two Bhaalspawn growing up together and ending up with similar classes. And a shoutout for my personal favorite, assassin>mage.

I'm okay with arcane magic actually. I've had parties with 3-4 arcane users. its the divine stuff i just never bothered to learn (i prefer to watch things blow up)

I'm trying out NPCs I never bothered with before myself; definitely worth it, even if they seem not very appealing at first. I was surprised I stuck with Valygar this time - usually I killed him and used his body to unlock the sphere, but he's better than expected.

I did use the All Strongholds cheat back in vanilla, and Druid definitely gets the least appealing one. For that alone, I'd take bard or mage. Cernd is a jerk and his kit isn't that awesome, but you can still experiment with the spells. It's an ok trade for getting a better stronghold to drag him along and ignore his "personality".

I'm sololing BG2 as a Dragon Disciple in my current run. At lvl 13 right now and having loads of fun watching entire groups fall to my magical prowess.

Blade. Universal character. You can be tank, spellcaster, supporter...whatever you want to be.

should I romance Viconia, Neera or Rasaad. I'm leaning Rasaad now just because a straight faced male cleric and a goofy elan-type female Half-Elf bard would make an interesting couple. Also not really sure Viconia+Bard is such a great combo. It seems perfect for Neera though

I'm neither an adept of divine casting, Paladins are as far as I go in that area. I'm a lover of Thievery, Fighting and Arcane Magic. And awesomeness! So take a Blade!

Blade. I've easily had the most fun with a Blade charname in BG2, especially after getting chainmail that allows for casting.
  • booinyoureyesbooinyoureyes Member Posts: 6,164
Blade it is... but Rasaas or Neera?
  • RajickRajick Member Posts: 207
Ive got a lot of love for bards but like ng for bard play throughs pretty much only go any kind of nutral if i'm a druid or wild mage

I'm doing chaotic neutral simply because I've never role-played that kind of character throughout the whole game. Just wish I could decide on Neera or Rasaad

    Bard, just because you can.
  • deltagodeltago Member Posts: 7,811
    Multiclass, or dualled Mage thief.

    Here is why:
If you want to play with the new NPCs minus Hexxat, you have a 2 nice front liners in Dorn and Ras. Neera can handle your arcane spellcasting and Vic can handle your divine spellcasting. Have these 4 and romance the one you get along with the best (IE play the game and choose). Having the fifth slot open for rotation (doing the other NPCs quests and what not) leaves you short on a bonafide lock opener/trap disabler. Best to roll one that can handle them. Having a secondary arcane caster to help debuff enemies is always wise though, so dual/multi the mage/thief.

However, if you're going to take Yoshi/Imoen as the 5th character, then choose a blade for a bit of everything and have them handle traps and locks.

Does Rasaad still have the good-alignment requirement? I know he did in BG1EE but I'm not sure if it's still in place in BG2EE? I played through his romance but my charname was chaotic good so I dunno if the alignment was an issue.
  • booinyoureyesbooinyoureyes Member Posts: 6,164
I ALWAYS take Yoshimo and Sarevok haha. I may change it up this time.

I hope not. I kinda wanted to have that romance first. Simultaneous romances between EE NPCs and Vanilla NPCs do clash right?

I think the restriction was dropped, so chaotic should be fine for Rasaad.

    Not in BG2:EE.

Wait so he does in BG1:EE and not in BGII:EE?

    ...That seems pretty fail

    Not really, since

his storyline in BG2:EE takes him to a darker place than he was in BG:EE
