Where do my party members go in multiplayer games?

I have created a party of six, but I was thinking to remove a party member and get an npc every now and then just to do his quest. I tested it with Jaheira in the dungeon, and the member just left. No "stay here" option.

Do I find them in an inn or something or they're gone forever?

Gone forever. You can export them then import them later to circumvent it, though.

BG2 Tweaks has a component that makes them stay where they are instead of going away forever.

BG2 Tweaks and mods work for EE?

What really? I just played a game with a friend, 3 characters each, and I started with a Kensai, but decided to abandon him for Minsc/Dorn cos it was getting pretty hard going... I am pretty sure my Kensai is still hanging around where Minsc was. But I guess he has no 'join party conversation'... so I never thought about how that might've worked...

Oh well I was basically watching a noobie play blind and occasionally giving hints, I am happy to just use the NPCs anyway. Running into the Nashkel Inn with with a battered and exhausted party after the trials of the road, only to face Neira, was hilarious! :D

Actually everyone, a PC party member who you kick out of your party will stay where you left them and wait for you to come back. You can then talk to them to add them back to the party. No mods are necessary! So go ahead and boot them as much as you want!

@Tresset: Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case. I just tried that with a few of my party members. Sometimes they will walk away and disappear, sometimes they will stay in place - but when you leave the zone and return they are gone.

The safe way to handle removing a custom character from the group is to export the character and then remove it from the group. Then, when you are ready for it to return you save the game, reload that save, and import the character into an empty slot. That way there is no risk of losing the character and the experience and gear (or even quest items) that it possesses.

@Emptiness is that so? Hmm. I have done this in BG1:EE before but it may not have been implemented in BG2:EE yet. I will look into it...
