Entangle (Druid spell) also affects allies

Hi everyone,

I am at the beginning of the game and I am baffled that Jaheira's Entangle also affects the allies of the Group and nailed them to the ground...

Having played to normal BG1, Entangle affected only the enemies yet...

Is this a bug or is it the rule of the game that evolved?

This was changed in the original bg2. Entangle is now a poor man's web

Not sure because I've always played on at least core rules... Everything basically affects team members :) that's why ADHW is so good.

The difficulty doesn't change the AoE effects in Baldur's Gate, you're thinking of Neverwinter Nights.

I think it always affected group members but haven't played the originsl in >10 years. It certainly did on a GOG installation with fixpack applied which I ran recently.

And it should in any case, powerful enough as it is since it works in cities, dungeons etc which it actually shouldn't if you know the PnP spell description.

Good early party friendly AoE spells are glitterdust and horror btw.

Original BG1 was enemies only so yeah, it was pretty powerful for a first level spell.

love AoE hold spells, always have some memorized. even in bg2 i always have everybody equipped with ranged weapons

Original BG1 and TotSC = Entangle would only affect allies

BG2 onward = Entangle affects all. Since BGEE runs on the BG2 engine (i.e. bg2 kits, updates etc) entangle now affects all. Hence a poor man's web. That said in Early BG1, its a great spell provided you're nailing the right people with it.

Web/Entangle is good for laying waste to enemies at range, while web is especially effective if you have Free Action on your frontliner(s) prior to casting it, so the frontliner can basically chunk everything that's stuck in the web while they lay helpless.

Read the spell descriptions. They will tell you if it affects "all creatures", "friendly creatures/targets" or "hostile/enemy".

I learned to be more careful when I used Symbol: Stun; reading the description, it did specifically state "all creatures in the area of affect". "All creatures" means friendly folk, too.

Would only affect ALLIES? Sounds like a real crappy spell...

He meant that the spell affected only the enemies. I think. :)

Yeah... I found out that change in Irenicus' dungeon. "OMG Golems... Oh, I know, let's Entangle them so we can shoot them to death!... Wait... why is Minsc Entangled?! Oh no, Minsc is dead..."

Ambush a group of baddies with entangle/web, and then drop a fireball on them. Instant gratification :D

The other great thing about BG1's entangle was that it was cast and forget. It wasn't like web where there are checks each round to see if the creature is no longer entangled. If it got entangled it was entangled for the spells duration.

Another case of hold and charm spells (and the like) being way overpowered in BG1.

...and go well with OP missile weapons... :)

Well, Web should be better than Entangle! (2nd level mage spell vs. 1st level druid spell.)

    @thrasymachus

Not saying it should. Druids also have a rather terrible level 1 selection anyway.
  • meaglothmeagloth Member Posts: 3,806
Yeah, they changed it for bg2 and so now the ee's use it. Because Druids were so OP they needed to be gimped.
  • ThrasymachusThrasymachus Member Posts: 903
@meagloth: The druid's spell selection for levels 1-3 is indeed weak, but I don't think making Entangle a superior version of Web is the solution.

I'd really like to see some of IWD's druid spells ported over.

I don't remember if Grease is in the BG games but I remember when playing Icewind Dale II and NwN2 Storm of Zehir my main tactics for group of enemies was this:

Entangle, Web, Grease. Then launching every missile weapon I had and Fireballs as well.
Who cares if it affects allies too?

  • bbearbbear Member Posts: 1,180
Grease adds a slow effect on anyone who fails their saves in the area. It's often overlooked because it has to compete with other great spells such as sleep or magic missiles.

On the topic Entangle, I chuckle whenever I see a Green Dragon getting entangled by its own spell.

Yes! But in core BGEE and BG2EE (not as a mod).
