Spell Disruption?

bbearbbear Member Posts: 1,180
What is the probability of spell disruption? Sometimes an enemy mage/cleric is disrupted after being hit once. Other times the spell is disrupted after getting hit a few times. Also, does the amount of damage dealt matter?

Well they have a chance to make a save if hit while casting. If they fail the save, is when they are interrupted

so does that mean a high level mage with saves below 0 can never be interrupted?

Despite what StoneSwords said, last I heard the rules for spell disruption are still unknown. Take a look at these topics on the subject:

There are many more, but I think that will give you a good look at the subject.

To me it seems they either get disrupted at the first hit or manage to cast the spell no matter how many times you hit them later. Most times this is what happens to me anyways, rarely do I get to disrupt a mage or priest if the spell survived the first hit.

So basically the answer is inconclusive / we dont know how the game implement this feature...

If you kill em, that will definitely disrupt the spell.

I wouldn't be so sure though...

In BG1, certain characters (like Mulahey, IIRC) are scripted (a.k.a. CHEATED) to continue casting spells even when hit.

In BG2, there are certain spells, like triggers, that are designed to be cast automatically and without interruption even when hit.

I believe spells that have spell casting speed of 0 (contingency and sequencer) cannot be disrupted. Or at least you have to hit that opponent at the instanteous moment when the spell is cast.

In one of my games, 3 of my mages magic missiled a dragon at off sync and the dragon STILL managed to cast heal on itself.

It's really unbelievable that after all these years since the game was released, people learned how to mod the crap out of it in many different ways but still can't figure this one out :)

My guess is — perhaps inspired by 3rd Ed. — that some combination of physical stats makes the caster more resilient. That would explain dragons and, maybe, the divine casters who tend to cast uninterrupted more than mages (in my eyes they are tougher — being able to wear armor being the factor).

Sometimes I wonder if spell disruption depends on which direction the caster is facing... Sometimes I can disrupt them no matter what but other times it seems impossible no matter how much damage they take (and that is on the exact same caster)...

I feel it depends on the casters.
I think i never failed to interrupt Neira (bounty hunter in nashkel) by using magic missile (even level 1) on her.
On the other hand, as stated by SharGuidesMyHand, Mulahey is very difficult to interrupt. Bassilus resists also quite well.
