Just freeze the stuff on the dead character unless you raise him? That way you won't have to loot him and people won't use their dead team as a big countainer. That's the main reason why I would always end up soloing the game... You do a fight, 3 members dies and you have to full loot them with the 3 remaining members to go on
That seems like the most sensible way of doing it. Already there is artwork for a body in the inventory - you could just make a body "container" which is has all the person's stuff in it - and weight the sum total of what they're carrying. Hell, you could even add body weight for added realism if you wish.
In order to be rezzed, you need to carry the body to the temple, but all of his loadout is preserved, provided you didn't take anything out of the container that was equipped on the character whne he died. Personally I'm not a huge fan of "freezing" the body container such that items can't be removed - but the container should be capped so that it could fit a characters full inventory, and nothing more.
Lets go back to the classic so, as chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy save systems.
I have a hard time seeing that work to the satisfaction of long-time fans. Adding features is one thing, but rewriting entire systems (or subtracting features) is probably overreaching a bit. Maybe a toggle switch for saving in towns could be useful, but it would have to be an option, not a requirement.
First I'd like to express my great dislike for removing death from the game. Do Not Want! I hated that mechanic in NWN and Dragon Age. It cheapens the experience something awful. I often caught myself not giving a damn what was happeing to the other party members, since I knew they'd be okay once the battle was over. So anti-RP! Plus, In BG1 there were 'inseparable NPC pairs'. Kicking one of them out of your team meant loosing the other. The only way to have only Xzar was to get Montaron killed. You will not take that option away from me! ;P
Second, on the subject: What happens now in game, is that after a character dies (a no-asploding death) his equippment lands on the ground, the portrait is grayed over, and body is nowhere to be found. BUT... if you remove the dead NPC from your party, his/her body lands on the groud next to you! (See above on how I know this So what I'd like to see, is what @Cadros suggested: The dead NPC's portrait is grayed, but the inventory can be accesed as normal - including taking off/putting on gear. Why shouldn't I be able to dress my friend for coffin, I ask? . But an appropriately weighted corpse of the deceased should appear in your pack. If you resurect them, they resume their life dressed/equipped as normal. If you decide to kick them out of the party, their corpse and all the gear you haven't taken already appears on the ground.
