One thing i've always wondered about. Considering where you are when the ToB plot exposition occurs, can't we at least postulate that it isn't strictly speaking the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and with no bias or slant?
Gorion fed CHARNAME nothing but lies all his life, and even after death.
"Nothing but lies" is pretty melodramatic. He withheld the truth about your father, and depending on how you interpret the ToB story changes he might have lied about your mother as well. Other than that there's nothing to suggest that he was a bad parent. The guy did die for you, after all.
Nothing to suggest, other than the fact CHARNAME grows up in isolation under the pretense of a lie with no friends other than a girl that was, whatever way you look at it, lied about as well.
I think by looking at the bigger picture, his reasons are irrelevant in regards to him being Lawfully Good, it just doesnt work out. CHARNAME is effectively manipulated due to the fact Gorion even knows that no matter what happens, the blood of Bhaal will start its corruption and CHARNAME needs to take the most painful route to a resolution due to Gorions actions.
(Since the quote seems to not be working right I'll just point out the above comment was made Crucades)
In all fairness Candlekeep was a safe and gentle place for a child of Bhaal. Look at the rest of the world, violence and death every 5 feet. Seriously, I was playing BG2 last night and nearly shouted "CAN'T I GO ONE HOUR WITHOUT SOMEONE ATTACKING ME!"
He wanted to raise you in a calm and most of all safe place. As for friends, I got the impression he had loads of friends. All older then him, but friends all the same. You don't need to be the same age to be friends.
Was there any indication Gorion even knew about Imoen? This is a serious question, I can't remember but it seems to be it might be possible he had no idea.
Though truth be told if it was revealed he knew in ToB I'd take it with a grain of salt. As I said earlier, I think what happened in BG1 was ment to be canon and they retconed the hell out of it to try and make DRAMA regarding CHARNAME's perception of reality. Didn't really like how they did it and this is exactly why. Because it made Gorion seem like someone who, by all accounts, he wasn't. Though I wonder if he knew Imoen would follow regardless and was waiting to talk to the both of you about your origin.
And reasons/context are important. Especially when it comes to alignment. Its the difference between some fighter murdering for fun and some paladin killing a wanted murderer.
