Human. Berserker (vital immunities). Dual to mage at 9 or 13. 9 if you want to max 2 weapon grandmasteries, 13 if you want the 2 attacks. Berserker gives vital immunities at critical moments. Mage is... well, mage. Broken imba crazy kinky suspicious cheesy fishy mafia stuff.
Greenstone amulet = 3000 gold in ulgoth's beard (reminder selling the free ring of wizardry yields you 9000 gold) and gives 10 charge of immunity to fear, charm and confusion (=everything save hold). Duration is short though (1 turn).
Ring of free action : pickpocket (2 potions of masterthievery from durlag tower merchant cost 1000 gold) or kill the gnome at the entrance of ulgoth's beard. If you are not a thief and don't want to kill him, you can rely on free action potions (3 to be sold in high edge, 1 from the revenant tomb outside of nashkel mines) until you get the ring from the iron throne.
Shortbows in my opinion. They are great in bgee thanks to special arrows (detonation, dispel, acid,...). In bg2, tuigan is available from the start and is a very solid choice.
Just restarted my solo run with another gnome fighter/ilusionist: David ElNomo. He is proficient with two handed swords because nothing beats a gnome with a sword twice its size.
Lets see how far this one gets. So far I have learnt (the hard way) that mages love horror and melf arrow. Other than hold person and poison arrows... What else should I be expecting to fight in each encounter with humans/demihumans?
In bgee longbows are better. But in bg2 shortbows have a clear advantage : - tuigan has the one extra APR - gesen shoots +4 missiles while longbows cannot shoot anything above +2.
In bgee the main dangers are : - hold (mostly clerics but also some mages and ghouls/carrion crawlers) -> wear the ring of free action or drink a freedom potion when you fight these - horror (mages)-> greenstone amulet charge or prot from fear spell - charm (mages, sirines. Be careful sirines melee attack also charms you) -> greenstone amulet - poison : some can be very nasty. Very easy to counter with an antidote. - some melee fights (very rare) : just use invis potion if you get into trouble
To summarize if you play it safe using a charge of greenstone amulet and wearing a free action ring and carrying potions of invis and antidotes in case if emergency you should have no problem. Final note : wands (especially the wand of fire flamethrower attack) are godly.
Ok, got the ring of free action and web from Ulgarth beard for 1200gp ( 3 potions of clarity from High Hedge) Suddenly the beregost dwarf and silke fell very easily. Will start a thread about David's no reload run. It might last a bit longer this time :-)
Well not everything is as it appears, Shar-Teel any romantic progress he had once hoped to make with the amazon, was nothing but an illusion in the end. Teyl attributed her apparent change of heart to her multiple experiences with death in a matter of days... Anyway thanks for your sympathies. At least he didn't die a virgin. (In fact he didn't die at all, he merely got charmed.)
@blackraven yes, things like forgeting to do the dishes after dinner and letting your partner die several times in a week usually strain a relationship :-) looking forward to the next character

Meanwhile I'll work out a new charname, after Teyl found his Waterloo in the Cloakwood Mines
