Question about Xzar, BG1/ToSC

I decided to keep Xzar only, Montaron met his demise when he ran into the hobgoblin throng buck naked. He keeps leaving my party randomly, threatening to make an ashtray out of my skull, and at first I figured it was an alignment thing, so (not wanting to murder random pedestrians) I got a saved game editor and changed his alignment to Lawful Neutral, and he's still doing it. So then I thought I must have not completely finished his quest-line, perhaps because I never talked to Beren after clearing the mines (he has disappeared and is no longer to be found, I checked all around the Nashkel temple).

Any idea how to keep the dude around? He's the spellcaster I intend to keep until the end, but I hate having to live in fear of him leaving me and the life I tried to build for us.

Is he actually leaving when you change him to lawful neutral? Neutral characters will complain if your rep gets too high but won't leave

Pretty sure NPC reaction to rep is tied to the NPC's script, not to their actual alignment, so changing it won't have an effect. Also why it's possible to (for instance) mod an evil NPC who makes happy comments at high reputation. You have to:

    1) Lower your reputation somehow
    2) Install a mod (BG2 Tweaks has this)
    3) I hear NPCs who join you after you already are past the breaking point (in this case 19-20 rep) won't leave, though I can't confirm. I don't know if Xzar will even join you at 20 rep.

    Yup, there's your problem.

They should leave the moment you gain another rep point.
