Using potions in BG1-ToSC

Eadwyn_G8keeperEadwyn_G8keeper Member Posts: 541
Does anyone have a link to a guide suggesting which encounters in BG1 need to be prepped with various potions other than Health. -Speed and Invisibility I can imagine, but when to use stuff like Giant Strength and Heroism??

So far, other than Health, the only potion I have used was the weird Strength potion from Carnival. That was so Imoen could tote a bushel of Ankheg shells to Beregost.

I do not have access to the potion and scroll bags in BGEE and find myself amassing quite a hoard of them in Beregost and am still in Chap. 3.

~Also, is there some place where I can get good value for magical items such as Chainmail+1,etc. that I am not using.

Ditto for Ankheg shells after I have the Ankheg Armor from Talruum. Thanks.

As far as potions are concerned, there aren't really "Specific uses" in mind. You pretty much have to gauge the enemy and your strategy. As a fellow hoarder, it is often difficult for me to 'Waste' the potion on something for fear that I might need it later. Really there are very few potions like that. Just make the most of what you have. If you find you have more than a single stack of something, it might be time to start using them, but intelligently. Don't just quaff them to see how drunk you get.

If you are facing something particularly tough and are fighting them hand to hand, use haste and strength. if you are using something like djinni or dragons, use protection from fire. etc... Watch the damage done and the effect and you should be pretty good. Khalid doesn't have the most impressive strength, so he usually gets all of my strength potions.

I do think that the lower levels of Durlag's Tower are really good places to use the elemental resist potions/scrolls. Just a tip.

As for buying and selling, Beregost is where I do most of my trading until i get to The Gate.

I'll quote a post i made a long time ago, so i don't have to write it all again.

    Potions
    Potions
    Potions

    And more potions.

Potions are the strongest and most reliable way to win a fight. You can have the same AC as a full plate wielding warrior, you can put your STR to 25 and you can be completely immune to fire, lightning, magic and much more. There are potions to make you immune to charm, confusion, hold and there are potions that will let you make every saving throw.

I normally save all the potions i can get and then buy every oil of speed i find in the shops. With scrolls and potions you can really buff up your character to amazingly powerful.

Oil of Speed - (haste +1 APR)
Potion of Absorption - (+10 AC crushing, 100% electric resistance)
Potion of Clarity - (Immunity: confusion, fear, charm)
Potion of Storm Giant Strength - (24 STR)
Potion of Defense - (Base armor class 0)
Potion of Heroism - (Hit points, Thac0)
Potion of Invulnerability - (Base AC 0, +5 Saving throws)
Potion of Magic Blocking - (Immune to all level 5 spells and under, so everything in BG1)
Potion of Magic Protection - (50% Magic resistance)
Potion of Magic Shielding - (50% Less damage from all magical spells, all saving throws succeed)
Potion of Mind Focus - (+3 DEX and INT)
Potion of Power - (Thac0, Hit points, All thief skills)
Potion of Regeneration - (Regenerate HP)

You can mix these to get the most out of them, just remember to look at all potions to figure out which to drink first and what to save until last moment.

    Mind Focus + Storm Giant + DuHM : 25 STR 25 DEX in BG1.

Some of these potions require you to be a fighter class (Heroism) but you'll still be able to drink most of the other potions.

In BG2 if you have problem vs mind flayers drink : Potion of Genius + Mind Focus and you'll be fine.

    Spoilers ahead!

Here is the items i use for the various fights on the critical path, while playing solo. They allow you to win all the game with basically no risk at all.

    - tarnesh : nothing (use shield to protect from MM)
    - neira : nothing (disrupt her casting with the wand of magic missile)
    - mulahey (same for bassilus): greenstone amulet + potion of freedom (not needed if you got the ring of freedom)
    - tranzig : nothing (he does nothing)
    - bandit camp main tent : greenstone amulet + potion of freedom (if you want to use web for that fight, not needed otherwise). Potion of grounding for the trap in the chest
    - group at the entrance of cloakwoodmines : greenstone amulet + potion of freedom (only if using web)
    - davaevorn : potion of magic blocking (immune for 4 round to all spells below level 5). Sometime you need to use 2 if he is too slow to use all his spells (fireball, lightning bolt, charm person, hold person in that order)
    - iron thone top level : greenstone amulet, potion of freedom, fire resistance x2 (important for that fight since several caster will use fire based spells like pillar of fire and flame arrow)
    - catacombs (get the books) : potion of grounding, potion of fire for the traps
    - catacomb group : greenstone amulet, potion of grounding (normally still active from the catacomb) since prat use lightning bolt which can be very nasty in the narrow corridor.
    - end of the game fights (iron throne, slythe, duchal palace, maze, final fight) :
you can do all using the following potions :
    - magic resistance x2 -> 100% MR.
    - potion of defense -> -10/-12 AC
    - potion of giant strength

Beware of angelo's dispell for the final fight (keep a double of all the potions). Apart from that, you should be able to complete all these fights within the duration of the potions.
For the final fight, use invisibility potions as well to kill sarevok with no risk.

Thanks. That is the kind of stuff I was interested in. Not so much to have a list nailed down in advance but to eliminate the feeling that all these potions must be around for a reason.

I guess one possibility is that Bioware was strewing potions to make the game possible for newb Charnames with first-roll stats, no spoilers and no reload levelling. If so one might prefer an extra quick item slot to really make use of potions a potential gameplay theme.

    Perhaps a mod-feature of vanilla Bard's knapsack!

My biggest and best tip for potions...

    JUST USE THEM.

You will end up with them coming out your ears by the end of BG1, and that's without using your money to buy up potions in the shops if you decide to use them sparingly.

Oil of speed and Oil of burning/explosions seem to be the ones I run out the quickest on a run, and they are pretty much replaced with the spell versions by the end.

One of the most enjoyable momment is the game is watching what an Oil of burning does to a bunch of xvarts! I want a mod that makes the huts explode into flames when I visit the village... I love the smell of Oil of burning in the morning...

LOL. Someone modded the BG area of the Sword Coast in NWN2 and made a persistent world out of it. They set up the Xvart village so that you could go "Visit". But they weren't purists and you had to be SIGNIFICANTLY higher level to survive. Still, I had endless fun "Mining" XP in that village for my Wizard because I could go in there and Carpet Bomb them with Fireballs. It was loads of fun.

For some reason... Hurling a bottle of flammable material and watching blue fur catch fire is nearly magic... Unless you cast Fireball... Then that IS magic...

I think I need to prepare my own FAQ notes about all the various potions, elixirs, oils with their relevant stats and duration. Then make decisions about what to keep, what to buy and what to sell.

I already can see that Potion of Absorption will be useful in Bandit Camp which is my next major objective.

Sell potions? Why in the blazes would you need to sell potions? Sell all you equipment to the guy in Nashkell. Steal anything back you actually want to use (including potions, if you must) Then sell any stolen guff you no longer need to Black Lily (although you will not be able to steal it back so be careful...)

All potions useful, accept the defence ones when you can get your AC past 0... They still improve saves, so not a complete lost. Drink up and enjoy!
