@Blackraven that was in my first BG2 run where I played with a party since I had 0 metagame knowledge and I don't like spoiling myself with guides/walkthroughs. Then I only made a party-run in BG2:EE :P once and twice in BG:EE. Gonna play BG:EE with party again but because of RP reasons this time.

I felt the impotency of low AC as well in ToB. Basically, the feel I got was BG = ranged is the way to go b/c it was so easy to die in melee. BGII = melee b/c you could deal so much damage and take little or none fairly easily. ToB = Back to ranged + constant hasted summoned horde b/c enemies just HIT you all the time, better to let your cannon fodder absorb the blows while you safely deal death with ranged weapons and magic.
For me, AC is always important. Especially for characters able to equip great, endgame gear, making their armor class near -15. The only thing i did not like about the whole AC mechanism, is that even if it is pretty high, it does not offer damage reduction, but only chance to resist being hit... Back in the day, one of the reasons i preferred Diablo 2 to BG2, was just this (wearing greater armor makes you also receive lesser damage from enemy blows)...

Actually, as a Diablo 2 expert, I can safely tell you that armor was even more useless there than in BG, due to the undocumented fact that it is reduced to zero while you are moving, unlike blocking. Furthermore, getting you armor to matter at Destruction difficulty is nigh impossible and a waste of equipment slots; Enemies will also frequently debuff you or inflict unresistable magical damage when they hit, regardless of your damage reduction (good luck against the many stunlockers);
