I just realized that when you encounter Drizzt south of High Hedge and have your nice little chat, he mentions he's just passing through on his way to Icewind Dale.

He then proceeds too wander away...

He also seems to think that demons come from the Nine Hells even though in a past adventure he traveled to the Abyss to fight his nemesis Errtu, who is a balor type demon, on his own turf. He is clearly a very confused dark elf.

Maybe in fact it's the same guy? It's just that your party is so terribly impressed with Drizzt's legend that they don't look closely enough to recognize him

I think he *must* have hit his head if he can't take care of those gnolls by himself.

I think perhaps large chunks of flying Gnoll may have hit him in the head. I doubt a single gnoll could bring Halberd to bear before Drizzt makes them 'splode in a glorious fountain of gore and dog stew.
