I just started a solo no reload monk run. LG, vanilla monk, 18-18-16-15-10-11
As usual i will avoid the basiliks/ring of wizardry shortcut.
So far i am level 2, having done a few fetch quest in beregost and kited (took 70 darts!!) the ogre belt fetish.
I will keep you informed (although it probably does not interest anyone)

And I'm sure that since you're good at soloing, this story will be insightful for those who want to know how to play as a monk.
Then i went to gnoll fortress, killing 1 winter wolf while getting there (thanks to gorion's belt).
There, i killed the 2 half ogres (kiting, ...) and grabbed the gauntelts of dex, which immediately sold and bought the wand of sleep.
With it i proceed to kill the 4 hobgoblins south of beregost the get the boots of stealth.
The monk is still incredibly weak and completely incapable to kill anything which is not asleep without using 50 darts.
I am now swimming in money with 5500 gold. i will use it to purchase :
- the amulet of shielding
- the necklace of missile
- the greenstone amulet
- potions of freedom
This should make me immune to almost everything the game can throw at me for the next 2 chapters.
Thanks to that, i am now level 5.
At low level, the monk has only 1 thing to rely on : his speed. But if you cannot kite it is rather useless.
Once the early game is past it should be easy enough.
As of now, it don't expect any problem save for the duchal palace.
For that specific fight, i will just use all potions at my disposal and hope i can kill them fast enough but i don't see any failproof way to do it since the monk has weak damage output compared to a fighter (no potion of speed, weak weapons) and no crowd control (as opposed to the arcane casters).
The final fight should be easy enough with the use of potions (double magic resistance (immune to magic), defense(around -12AC), giant strength)
Time to do the main quest now
Then i sneaked my way through the mines and killed mulahey while protected by the greenstone amulet and a potion of freedom. I had to use several potions of healing due to a few criticals from the skeletons and kobolds.
Nimbul died easily and with no risk with the amulet of shielding.
Then I did a few old quests at the fai (landrin spiders, joia's ring) and killed tarnesh who damaged me very seriously (thought i did not need to use the shield amulet but he got very lucky damage rolls on MM).
in the bandit camp, using boots of avoidance and elven bane, i could not get hit by the archers.
Taugosz kann was delt by "backstabbing" him with the dagger of venom.
With the greenstone amulet, a shield amulet and a potion of strength, the main tent was easy enough.
I am now level 6 and ready to go through cloakwood (which i will anyway skip for the most part)
For this run i will probably skip the boots of speed though.
For Davaevorn, i will use potions of magic blocking to be completely immune to him. 2 potions are enough to make him waste his very small spellbook (1 lightning bolt + 1 fireball + 1 charm + 1 hold)
For the battle horrors,
If you are lucky, his lightning bolt will kill or seriously damage them.
Otherwise, i see 2 ways to deal with them :
- abusing my superior speed to "backstab" them with the dagger of venom
- buffing with a potion of defense and a potion of giant strength which should allow me to tank them.
To be safe, i will probably use both
The potion of defense is really powerful on a monk since it will allow you to reach very low AC (around -8 at this point of the game, -12 at the end)
- i used a potion of freedom to run through the spider maps
- i could not resist and killed drasus group using potions of explosion and charges from greenstone and shield amulet
- i sneaked through the mines
- against the battle horrors i was stupid enough to get stuck between them and a table. That way i had to tank them, which was not that hard thanks to the potion of defense that led to -10 ac. However due to a few critical hits, i had to use a fair amount of healing potions
- davaevorn was completely harmless thanks to potions of magic blocking.
Next stop : baldur's gate
I buffed with potions and amulets for everything but forgot than one of the cleric would be casting hold.
I failed my saved (evidently) and died.
Monk is definitely doable, although it is one of the weakest class for bgee and this leads to a rather boring gameplay ( unless you LOVE kiting and metagaming buffing)
Does anyone have a harder time with Dav than his horrors?
The Iron Throne fight is basically a must kite for my solo attempts. Except sorcerer.
To be safe :
- fire immunity is necessary since the casters will use flame arrow, and pillar of fire
- greenstone amulet for confusion
- potion of freedom for hold
To kill them, neckless of missile or wand of fire.
For a sorc, web x2, spiderspawns, haste = win.
I had once keepered for Rasaad a circlet (just a plain, non-magical one) to stave off crits in BGEE. Seemed unfair that even with the best AC (which Rasaad can top!) he still suffers double the damage always...
