Losing party members

This is my first time playing BG1 and I've been doing so without any kind of guide. I'm currently on Chapter 5 and the party I've been using for most of the game has been: Me (blade), Jaheira, Khalid, Xzar, Safala. I killed Montaron and kicked him out of the party.

I've met a lot of potential party members throughout my adventures and always invited them into the party and then kicked them under the assumption that I could just go grab them from the Friendly Arm Inn any time I want.

Now I have a problem because Khalid just killed Xzar and now I have no mage. Xzar was one of my most powerful party members. Now there are a couple of people hanging out at the Friendly Arm Inn but theres no one there that I want in my party.

I'm pretty sure I've dismissed all of the "good" aligned potential party members and now they won't come back. Am I screwed? Not having a mage is going to suck. How hard would it be to beat the game with a blade, Jaheira, Khalid, and Safala?

    Usually your party members remain right where you dropped them off. Unless they were really pissed off with you at the time (you'll have noticed from the dialogue and the fact they walk off the screen) due to too low or high reputation for their morals, they'll be standing there still. You can get Neera in Beregost, she's a mage that shouldn't have too much trouble with your party and then there's Edwin down in Nashkel; he's evil mind you and kind of wants to go kill another mage, Dynaheir, which is good-aligned and comes paired with Minsc.

    Only the new NPCs go to the FAI. The others stay where you kicked them out unless your reputation isn't on par with theirs then they are gone for good.

    You can still beat the game without a mage. However, if you want one, Quayle is hanging outside of Baldur's Gate would probably be the easiest (and closes to your level) to find at this point.

    Have you discovered the *secret* NPC yet? That NPC may satisfy your needs very well...
