Bug? Killing Zhurlong costs five reputation points

AnrieAnrie Member Posts: 8
Good afternoon,

I just started playing Bladur's Gate after buying it on gog.com. As per their recommendation, I installed both Baldur's Gate II Fixpack and Baldur's Gate Trilogy-WeiDU 1.18.

According to every guide and walkthrough out there, you can kill Zhurlong the dwarf after returning his boots, without your reputation decreasing. However, every time I do so, I lost five reputation points.

Same happens when killing Marl at Feldepost's Inn.

I might be mistaken, it's been years but doesn't that mod alter the way the reputation system works?

I've checked the readmes for both mods, and neither mention changing the reputation system.

@Anrie, are those the only mods you have installed? If not, can you post your WeiDU.log?

I have just tested it on my BGT install and I didn't get reputation loss for killing Zhurlong and Marl.

However, I'm still using BGT 1.16 and the Fixpack 9.01, so maybe it was a recent change.

Edit: there is a reputation loss also in BGT 1.16, after Zhurlong's quest has been completed and Marl has been calmed.

Uh, can't help you as far as those mods go, but in general *shouldn't* murdering someone for his boots cause your rep to drop? If you want to keep the boots, just don't tell him you found them...

Those walk throughs might be out of date, it could have been a bug that got fixed in a patch.

Well, in principal, yes, but Zhurlong is a thief, which is why it would seem your reputation shouldn't drop. Same with Marl, who is a drunk who threatens you.

All the walkthroughs I've looked at, as well as sites like Baldur's Gate Wiki, mention that these characters can be killed without loss to reputation, so I just found it odd.

Like I mentioned, I just started playing and really want to get as much experience as possible, plus, from what I read, it seemed to be the norm to kill these guys for extra xp.

Those are the only ones I have installed. (I did install a widescreen mod, but promptly uninstalled it again - it didn't look very good - plus I severely doubt it would affect the game like this.)

    Here is the WeiDU.log:

Not that big a deal, I suppose. It just bugs me, since a) the game shouldn't behave like this and b) I can't find any indication that it's happened to anyone else. (I don't like unsolved mysteries.)

@Anrie, I've checked the code in those mods and it is BGT that is causing the reputation loss. It is a deliberate change and not a bug.

You can still kill Zhurlong without reputation loss, before completing his quest. After the quest is done, his class is changed to INNOCENT, so he cannot be killed anymore without penalty.

Marl can also be killed without loss before calming him down, but after his class is also changed to INNOCENT.

@Erg, Thanks, that certainly clears it up.

A bit late, but thanks for the advice. Since I wasn't planning on playing the game more than once, I really wanted to get as much of the expierence as possible. At the time I thought the expierence points I would've gotten from Marl would've been crucial, but yes, in the end it didn't matter.

I always enjoy killing Marl. Maybe he doesn't deserve to be murdered, but I definitely think he should get his ass kicked for being a loud mouth bully. Knock him down a peg.

I always try to calm him down, but last time I had BG1 NPC Project installed and Montaron in my party. Let's just say that things didn't go too well :)

    CHARNAME manages to calm Marl.

Montaron: Even let ye dung-stinkin' grub-farmers in!
CHARNAME: Easy, Monty. We don't want any trouble here.
    Montaron: Bollocks!

    Brawl starts...

I like to calm Marl down, then backstab him.

@Erg - Yeah, that's not the way to rein in Monty... :-)
