Got the game from a friend who came for a visit, He told me about the ring by Friendly arms inn but we couldn't find it, the ankheg armour we did find. I stopped looking for hidden items after that. Don`t remember if i found any by accident later. On a different note, day before last i did find an old backup cd with bg1 saves labeled 22nd nov 1999 to bad they won`t work in bgee.
The ring of wizardry (hidden one) was removed in the (last?) patch, some other hidden items too IIRC. It was a nice easter egg, but seriously OP. I hope there will be easter eggs in BG:EE just as long as they are not OP and belong in the fantasy setting.
Actually there was more than one ring of wizardry in the game. IIRC there was a house in Baldur's gate with some tough encounter where you could get a 2nd ring. Unless this one got removed as well.
I'm surprised anyone ever found such a well hidden item.
With BG: EE in the BG 2 engine however, I wonder what the developers will do to keep these items hidden when they can be discovered with just the press of a button.
Two related parts from Overhaul AMAA:
"There are going to be more items scattered about the game world, but the ease of finding them has not changed. It's D&D, you gotta check every crate and barrel! You never know which garbage heap that +5 Holy Avenger is hidden in..."
"Tab functionality is in, but some items are flagged to not appear to the tab key ;-) On the tablets there is a new button we call the hint button which does the tab display for a couple seconds"
Come to think of it, I'm not even sure HOW I managed to finish the game the first time, the only decent magical items I remember having were the Brawling Hands and SPRINT BOOTS.
I only ever found the ring of protection in the area east of where gorion is killed. A couple years after playing bg I came across the fact that there were hidden caches of items hidden on certain maps. I don't know how anybody could possibly ever stumble across the RoW, you would have to be extremely lucky.

Which button?
Tab
BTW there are often "hints" provided by NPCs that you encounter aluding to the presence of these items, they they can be fairly obtuse
