noob question: icewind dale or heart of winter?

in Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition
About to start my game but which option do i choose? I thought one is the expansion so I am confused that I can start there...any help is appreciated.

    So when i finish the icewind dale story i enter with the same party to HoW?

    Think of Heart of Winter like Throne of Bhaal for BG2

    Heart of Winter is more like Tales of the Sword Coast for BG1. It's an optional adventure that happens within the main story.

    You can find the questgiver guy in your base of operations city in the game. He will take you up to HoW areas and you can't come back till you settle things there. HoW areas are notoriously difficult so the guy won't accept you until your party has some sizable experience and levels.
