Our best hope for a NWN successor in a long while

NWN fans we have cause to celebrate as Shards Online is looking like the best spiritual successor that we have seen in a long time. It will allow you to build your own custom online worlds aka Shards and host them either individually or together in the form of clusters. In addition to the high level of customization you will also have the ability like in Neverwinter to act as a DM and control world events. A dev has already confirmed that it would be possible to write a ruleset based off of the D20 system. You can learn more about the game via the Kickstarter page which has ended a day ago but you can still get acess to the alpha/prealpha by donating through Paypal though that ends in about 6 hours. If it reaches 10k we will have character customization in the alpha which would be quite good. Lets hope for the best

...Meeeeeeh. I am not impressed. And I am a huge fan of the NwN games, I have both and played them to death and still do.

Cartoony Fable/WoW-like graphics, online only (?), not even close to what the NwN games could do and it's not DnD.
The last one is important because the NwN games had and still have a ton of DnD roleplaying servers (Forgotten Realms, Planescape, Ravenloft etc) and those are just not possible unless they change every rule everywhere.

But hey, I might be wrong and modders change EVERYTHING about the game to make it how they like. Time will tell.

Hey Archaos, I understand your concerns about the graphics I shared them too but I think it is also important to note that this game is still in pre alpha and a lot can change and has already. Take a look at this video and watch how even in pre alpha the game's graphics have changed significantly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0XSvE_jSIM But you will be happy to know that because of custom assets you do have the potential to completely change the look of the game. Take this for example; https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/7101 Now because this content is legally owned even if purchased by a player could not be used on a Shard because like NWN custom content has to be downloaded and while the server owner may have paid for this asset he would essentially be distributing it for free. But this shows what people can do with the UNITY engine and goes beyond what haks could previously do ; players came up with a tons of high quality content and graphic enhancements for NWN. People will undoubtly do the same for Shards should it become a sucesss.

Alternatively, you could still play NWN or NWN 2... plenty of servers around

NwN 1 and 2 are very dated. And I don't mean just the graphics. With mods NwN2 looks like many MMOs of today.
Also the GameSpy server was taken down, which means no online support. Fans restored it themselves.

The engine is dated and the ruleset is very unbalanced.
Something like the NwN games but in Pathfinder would be PERFECT.

No creative restrictions from Atari, Hasbro or WotC while having a new campaign setting and mechanics to explore.
And since Paizo is a much more sensible publisher, I would be confident that they would give them full creative freedom and time to develop an amazing game.

Why so shameful? It's a really cool place:) I haven't see so many nice and helpful people in any other computer gaming forums.

Meh, it's alright. Kidding, kidding! *Nimran dodges quickly to avoid a swarm of angrily thrown tomatoes*

Pre Alpha 3 has been announced to be released this December which will means anyone who has or does pledge $40 will be able to play. When alpha hits sometime early next year (devs are aiming to be on STEAM by March) this will pretty much be their first official release. This means player hosted servers, modding via scripting which having gotten a glimpse at what pre alpha admins have been able to do just with that is pretty impressive. Than assuming there isn't any significant delays they will really open the floodgates later that year and allow for full blown modding which includes custom worlds, monsters, equipment etc. essentially what we have all been waiting for. If you want to see how far the game has come here are two videos; one is about an hour's worth of footage from a Massively commentator which shows off one of the more recent builds and the second is the highlights from the most recent community roundtable. You can watch all the community roundtables on their Twitch channel. They are quite informative.

Lost me with "online". Only interested in single player adventure building. If I want to play with other people I have my PnP campaign.
