Ok... I didn't want to, but I'm afraid I'll have to do it now.
I can't find an important quest item (the idol), which I know I have retreived. Since I recovered the other item you need for the same quest, I wanted to go and give both items to the NPC to complete the task, but the idol was nowhere to be found.
I'm starting to fear I sold it to a merchant by accident, but I visited all merchants I can think of and they don't have it. Do sold items disappear from the merchants' lists, by the way?
Anyway, now I don't know what to do. Maybe I should just spawn the item in my inventory (are BG:EE cheat codes different from BG's, though? Ctrl + Tab isn't doing anything).
For BGEE, I use a Hex Editor and change some quantities from time time -- like more arrows, if I'm running out and don't want to travel back to a merchant. Main thing I need is "rest" to restore spells -- I rest a lot.
Reloading the last save game fixed being killed the couple times it happened. I consider reloading a "cheat" -- but don't have patience to "start over".
I use them for testing (makes levelling easier) and for getting the elven chain armor for my bard (I'm passed the encounter I should have gotten it in). But for gameplay related matters I won't cheat 99.9% of the time.
I use cheats to make the game more difficult so that I can add multiple copies of opponents to fight at once. I also use them to circumvent glitches, in multiplayer to reach areas that are more of a match for our character levels, making it possible for some of my favorite NPCs to join my party, and to recreate NPCs since I can't otherwise import them when I start a new game.
I never use cheats to make the game easier, I use them to make it more fun by either making it more challenging or forcing the game to include content that I think it should include but which it otherwise doesn't.
I've never used a cheat code in any game, actually. Would ruin the fun for me.
So if you experience a glitch in the game, such as for example, the one in Irenicus's dungeon where the golem cannot open the door which completely prevents you from moving forward with the game, what do you do?

Pickpocket the golem with Imoen? Maybe get the key from that? (I've never encountered the glitch you are referring to).
Well, yeah. I don't see the harm in clearing fog of war, or teleporting yourself to the end of an area that you've been through already. I mostly use it to cut down on pointless busywork, such as when I'm trying to get the hell out of Cloakwood for the 15th time. I can think of several dozen other ways to break the game that don't involve using cheat keys, *cough* Algernons Cloak *cough*

Algernons Cloak is very useful but in BGEE its charm ability only works once/day (well once then you need to rest).
I don't want to waste time rolling for stats I'd like rather just give myself a stat budget ala 3rd ed. and then use SK to edit my character. That's pretty much the only thing I can think of doing though didn't really even know this game had cheat codes till reading this forum. Personally I need to keep it rather "pure" or killing things wouldn't be as fun. Might read about how to teleport your grp though since running through big maps can get a bit old.
With exception to correcting a freak bug beyond my control, I never cheat on ANYTHING these days. I almost stopped gaming entirely back in the day when my first reflex was to hit up cheat codes, gamesharks, trainers, etc. and blow through games. You never really learn to play properly, and due to blowing through stuff more quickly you often miss the innate charm of a particular game. There's a bunch of games I used to hate in the past due to how boring they were or the disappointment that I couldn't cheat in that I genuinely love now because I actually weaned myself off from cheats and started actually looking into game mechanics or appreciated their difficulty...especially given how boringly easy most games have become these days...exception to certain little niche titles like Dark/Demons souls that actually try for a challenging and rewarding experience, they're really all I have left.
Now, I'm ok with modding. Once you're utterly dominated every aspect of a game, it's fine to add new stuff to keep it fresh....though I'm fairly picky...I dislike mods that add OP items or characters (Or HORRIBLE writing), or highly buggy quests, but beyond those, the rare few that meet my standards, I play and enjoy.
I use the console for creating the various bags because I CBA faffing about shifting stuff between NPCs. I also use it for Ctrl+J on a map I've already explored, for quick healing after a battle (I use spells & potions in battle) and very occasionally certain potions that you can't always get from the shops. I don't cheat with ammo or armour though.
If I were to use cheat codes, I may as well just uninstall the game and admit that I am incapable of enjoying the game, and I'd rather that not happen.
I've been known to start in ToB and cheat in all the items I would have found if I had done a proper run through SoA... Or to add convenience items to BGEE (scroll cases and such).. And I might go and change the NPC classes in Shadowkeeper so that I can have NPC interactions but still have "created" my own party...
The last 3ish responses (not anduines but certainly my own) I think are proof of why polls like this should have a sometimes/other option. Even if they mean only to be a silly poll.

^^^This. Specifically, I have used the cheat console for a few purposes, but not the ones described in the poll. 1.) Missing string/glitch that I want to rectify without reloading a save from hella days ago, or simply has not been fixed yet, Such as: I CLUAed the Elven Chain in when it doesn't drop, sometimes doors let me go through them but then say that I can't go back through and that I require a key to open it (more in BG2), and more. 2.) Curiosity: While I have never tried the falling cow/chicken commands, I have used the CLUAconsole to look at some the items before I play the game.
i cheat the whole way through. i am the son of Bhaal, a GOD, why shouldnt i be the most powerful thing in the game. I will not cheat in BG2 but In BG1 ill cheat my ass off. dont know why exactly but it seems right to me. only think that could make it better is if i could import my ToB character in Candlekeep..

Can you not import BG2 characters into the Enhanced Edition?
You can in Tutu. I'm planning to finish my current game in Tutu before I get the Enhanced Edition. In my current game, I'm playing with Sendai from TOB as my PC. I've played other games with my regular PC from TOB imported into Tutu.

It's the golem that needs to run off and open the door. I've never tried pickpocketing it because I didn't think it used a key. Maybe that would work, idk. I just used ctrl J to get past the door after I'd done everything that I knew I had to do.
I only encountered this specific glitch in one playthrough, but it prevented me from getting out of the first level of the game without cheats. I've encountered other similar problems throughout the game. This was right after I installed mods for the first time so that was probably why it happened.

Heh. If I'd never used the console in any game I'd still be stuck in a wall in Balmora. I'll use it for a variety of purposes: to tweak character appearance, to repair bugged quests, even to make NPCs I'm fond of essential in games that don't allow resurrection, but I don't see the fun in giving myself powerful items.
It's nothing so melodramatic as the poll options suggest; if I don't need the codes, then not enabling them ensures I don't get into the habit of using them, rather than just being lazy about everything.
