Do I have to kill Therik?

in Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition
Therik is a skeleton warrior dude you talk to in the Vale of Shadows. I can give him a key in my possession and leave peacefully, but then I am unsure how to proceed. It seems like I remember being able to talk with Arundel about it in the original Icewind Dale, but his dialogue options don't seem to change now.

    Go ahead and kill him, (Therik, not Arundel).

    @jackjack I realize killing him will advance the story (it's what I've done on previous play through). I was just curious as to whether or not it could be avoided while still advancing the plot.

    Ah, my mistake. As far as I'm aware, there's no way to advance the story without smashing him into little bony bits. I'm not 100% on this, though.

    He's dead certain it's his only course of action. He's prolly dead beat from walking in that crypt for all those years. On the subject of finding a non-violent solution, he's like a dog with a bone.
