ITT, Play As Yourself!

MilesBeyondMilesBeyond Member Posts: 324
Has anyone else here ever tried doing a playthrough of BG as "themselves?"

i.e. picking the class, alignment, and stats of your character based on who you are?

In this thread, make a character that best represents you in real life!

Start with your stats. This quiz here seems like a pretty good way of determining things: http://kevinhaw.com/add_quiz.php

(Note that BG features much higher stats. I believe a score of around 10-11 is considered "average," though I'm sure @LadyRhian will be able to clarify on that. If you want to make it a BG character, maybe add 3-4 to each stat, or at least the more important ones)

I got:

STR 9
DEX 5
CON 8
INT 14
WIS 13
CHA 10

Now, pick a class, and say why (it works better if you assume you live in the world, so not "I would be a wizard/priest because I've never seen magic before and it looks really cool!").

I'd go with Mage, partially because INT seems to be my highest RL stat, but also because I'm an academic at heart, and I love reading complex philosophical and theological volumes, and academia seems to be, fundamentally, what D&D magic is all about. You don't get to sling around incredible arcane power without spending a couple decades reading some pretty involved tomes by candlelight. Unfortunately, none of my stats are high enough for a Specialist. Assuming BG stat bonus of, say, +4 per stat, I could be an Abjurer, Diviner or Necromancer, but none of those really appeal to me.

Cleric is also a possibility, partially because I apparently also have high WIS IRL, partially because I'm religious IRL, and partially because I enjoy helping people and would like to do cleric-y things.

A Cleric/Mage would be ideal, but seeing as how I'm human, I don't really see that happening ;)

Now, pick your class unique skills. Mages, choose 3 spells you'd learn first, Warriors, choose your weapon profs, Rangers, your racial enemy, Thieves, your thief skills, etc.

I'd probably start with:

Shield, because I'd like to have SOMETHING to help keep me alive
Friends, because bonus CHA like that would have a million applicable uses IRL
Sleep, just as a non-violent way of dealing with all sorts of situations

Now, finally, your alignment. There've been plenty of alignment quizzes already, so pick whichever one you like best. This is apparently the "official" one: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20001222b

I'm Neutral Good, or, put more simply, I'm a person who believes in good and also that both order and chaos have their places.

And there you have it! Now you can play BG (or any other AD&D game) as yourself!

I may just give this a try. I went with a single stat roll (no reroll) set my stats to the ones from the quiz then distributed the extra points (13 total) evenly, with my 1 spare point in my primary stat. I ended up as a NG Priest of Lathander:

    STR - 11
    DEX - 9
    CON - 9
    INT - 17
    WIS - 18
    CHA - 15

    Kevin Haw's test:

    STR 14
    Dex 9
    Con 15
    Int 15
    Wis 12
    Cha 13

    On the other test:
Elf, Neutral Good, Druid lvl 4
    Strength- 16
    Dexterity- 14
    Constitution- 16
    Intelligence- 19
    Wisdom- 17
    Charisma- 14

RP is all about rp. Playing as "yourself" is just dumb.

9-12 are considered "average" stats. For someone who works in a specific field, such as strength-related, I believe you can have up to a 15. For example, a blacksmith, an information librarian, hurdle-jumper, priest, and politician can have up to a 15 in strength, intelligence, dexterity, wisdom, and charisma. I am not sure what profession would need a 15 Con, so... But if you are literally never sick, that would probably qualify. I'd decrease Wisdom if you continue to do things which you know are bad for you. Do you smoke, do drugs, overeat, etc? Lower wisdom.

Another excellent test (and one with a less opinionated nature) can be found on Angelfire. It goes by the name "D&D Ability Score Test", along with a corresponding alignment, race and class test. I'll add the link if I can locate it later.

After taking Kevin Haw's test I was assigned the following ability scores:

    Str: 11
    Dex: 12
    Con: 11
    Int: 15
    Wis: 16
    Cha: 12

    Alignment: Neutral Good
Race: Human or Dwarf (according to race test)
Class: Cleric -> Mage, or Cleric

I was going to post a sarcastic comment about how high @karpasz 's ability scores are, but I realized I would only be kidding myself. It may sound cynical, but some people are just better than others. :/

I've started working out and I think I'll be able to add 1 or 2 to my Str and Con by the end of the school year. I'll keep you all updated :).

Hah! The tests are hardly definitive of you as a person. For example, your level of education seems to have a significant impact on your INT, despite the fact that this may not actually be the case. It's more of a fun "Roll your own stats!" thing than a serious assessment of your abilities.

i always wanted to, but there's not superman option in the game :P j/k

i took the test and got decent stats, and was told that i'm a lawful good cleric......that's the one class i don't like to play. pali i enjoy (they get swords) but clerics......but maybe it's like what they say, if you do it at work, you don't want to do it at home :)

    Yay! Lvl1 commoner

That's probably right... Now I just got to watch out for that cat

    Str: 11
    Dex: 11
    Con: 8
    Int: 13
    Wis: 13
    Cha: 14
  • AmardarialAmardarial Member Posts: 270
    Str 16
    Dex 11
    Con 15
    Int 17
    Wis 11
    Cha 10

I'd be a Wizard, fits my personality, mindset perfect.

    Starting spells

    Shield -- Basic Protection.
Familiar -- I'm a animal person, and having a smart one would defiantly be advantageous.
True Strike -- While I do love me some academics, I do like being able to hold my own in combat.

I'm Chaotic Neutral, I do as I believe is correct, allowing nothing to sway my choices. Things such as Law and Chaos are simply a means to a end, nothing more or less.

for my stats, kind of surprised on the Dexterity, expected lower, guess I do just enough to be average, same for Wisdom. Charisma part was awkward as well. Strength comes from loads of working out, and army combat training, Constitution factors in ability to take punishment (I've broken bones and not noticed, also received 2nd degree burns without noticing)....

I've taken numerous blows without noticing, but don't you mean *fractured* bones without noticing? Breaking a bone and not noticing is typically due to drugs, as when i shattered my knee, it didn't hurt until after the surgery, but i knew something was wrong and didn't try to stand up.

Edit: and yes, i mean Shattered my leg, had to be pieced back together as it was in 100+ pieces.

    I'd say

    Str: 11
    Dex: 16
    Con: 14
    Int: 16
    Wis: 15
    Cha: 10

I would probably be an Archer (Arcane Archer if 3e)

    Kevin Haw says
    Str: 13
    Dex: 14
    Con: 15
    Int: 17
    Wis: 17
    Cha: 11

There, I'd probably be a Sorcerer (with BG's int modifier, I generally get things faster and have to study alot less)
    Otherwise a Mage

    EasyDamus says

    Strength- 18
    Dexterity- 18
    Constitution- 16
    Intelligence- 16
    Wisdom- 15
    Charisma- 14
NG Fighter/Sorcerer (see Both of my other preferred professions)

I always found it a bit weird to try to translate a D&D stat into normal life, especially when you take into account the seeming relative abundance of D&D characters with fairly high stats. Like, if you have strength 18, does it mean you're as strong as it's physiologically possible for a human to get (in which case only a handful of people in the entire world are likely to qualify), or merely that you're very athletic/strong and in great shape in relation to your body mass? And how thought-through is it that guys like Yoshimo and Montaron, neither of whom look very beefy, have strengths of 17 and 16 respectively?

As for my stats, they ended up being:

    STR 11
    INT 18
    WIS 17
    DEX 13
    CON 8
    CHR 15

I'd most likely be a mage as well, suits my disposition.

    Let's see what that tests gives me when I answer all its questions truthfully;

    STR 20/200
    DEX 22
    CON 21
    INT 25
    WIS 24
    CHA ∞

    Ah, sounds about right.
I'd pick a bard to play, but I think my stats are too low for it to not suck.
Guess I'll be a Wizard then.

    I Am A: Neutral Good Human Druid/Sorcerer (2nd/2nd Level)

    Ability Scores:

    Strength-9

    Dexterity-10

    Constitution-12

    Intelligence-14

    Wisdom-13

    Charisma-11

    Alignment:
Neutral Good A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order. However, neutral good can be a dangerous alignment when it advances mediocrity by limiting the actions of the truly capable.

    Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

    Primary Class:
Druids gain power not by ruling nature but by being at one with it. They hate the unnatural, including aberrations or undead, and destroy them where possible. Druids receive divine spells from nature, not the gods, and can gain an array of powers as they gain experience, including the ability to take the shapes of animals. The weapons and armor of a druid are restricted by their traditional oaths, not simply training. A druid's Wisdom score should be high, as this determines the maximum spell level that they can cast.

    Secondary Class:
Sorcerers are arcane spellcasters who manipulate magic energy with imagination and talent rather than studious discipline. They have no books, no mentors, no theories just raw power that they direct at will. Sorcerers know fewer spells than wizards do and acquire them more slowly, but they can cast individual spells more often and have no need to prepare their incantations ahead of time. Also unlike wizards, sorcerers cannot specialize in a school of magic. Since sorcerers gain their powers without undergoing the years of rigorous study that wizards go through, they have more time to learn fighting skills and are proficient with simple weapons. Charisma is very important for sorcerers; the higher their value in this ability, the higher the spell level they can cast.

-----According to the Test-According to me :
    STR : 15 --- 17
    DEX : 9 --- 11
    CON : 12 --- 15
    INT : 15 --- 11
    WIS : 16 --- 16
    CHR : 10 --- 9

Well, I guess I am smarter than I thought and weaker than I thought. No matter. Seeing the stats, I daresay I'm a... freak? XD

    The results...
    STR:9
    INT:17
    WIS:13
    DEX:9
    CON:11
    CHR:12
    Class:
I'd say mage, the int stat might be useful for that. I'd pick the spells:
Burning Hands -what's more awesome than throwing fire around.
Larloch's minor drain -useful, deals damage and heals.
    Charm person -that's also useful.
Maybe specialized as a necromancer, or maybe a wild mage.
    Race: Human.
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral/Chaotic Evil (I took that test before several times, it's usually one of these)

Well, according to the kevinhaw.com ad&d stats:

    Str 15
    Dex 16
    Con 10
    Int 17
    Wis 16
    Cha 12

I'm an academic at heart so I guess I could be a mage. Then again, I work with biology/environmental protection, so a ranger or druid'd suit me aswell. In addition, I'm good with bows and rifles, so I think I'll settle with either an archer or a fighter/druid focusing on bows. I've always loved the look of scimitars though..

Yeah, I'll go with a half-elf fighter/druid with above stats (although I guess my charisma i too low) and my proficiency points in scimitar and longbow.

Yes, I tried it once: do a playthrough just as if it where you who suddenly found himself into Faerûn. The gest of the challenge (it was on the old Bioware fora that disappeared) was a little different though: to play without meta-gaming by imagining it was actually you. I can't remember what class I'd play it with, but 'twas a hellish experience. Being someone who needs medication and coaching to be able to handle to live in this world, which is relatively stable, to imagine living in Faerûn was hell. I quited after seeing some dozen killings and seeing some of my newly found friends slaughtered and getting very scared, anxious, confused and feeling ST - I just couldn't take it. From then on, I decided to see it as a game, not an experience 'I' go through.

    My results (I'm apparently playable!):

    Str 11
    Dex 15
    Con 8
    Int 17
    Wis 16
    Cha 17

(STR) I try to go to the gym regularly, (DEX) am pretty agile and have good hand-eye coordination, (CON) have allergies/mild asthma, a thin build, and am an utter lightweight with alcohol, (INT) am working on a PhD, (WIS) have good judgment and intuition, (CHA) and have a strong personality and am easy on the eyes.

I would definitely be a Necromancer (with either the Philosopher or Academician kit). A cleric/necromancer wouldn't be out of the question. Magic, the occult, alternative religion/spirituality, and the mysteries of life, death, and life-in-death have always fascinated me. Undead are interesting (and useful), but I'm more interested in the life-force/death energy aspects of necromancy.

As far as alignment goes, I tend to get Lawful Neutral, True Neutral, and even Lawful Evil on alignment tests. Probably Lawful Neutral (evil), which happens to be the same as my favorite Greyhawk goddess of death and magic, Wee Jas: The Stern Lady.

Starting BG spells for a real-life context: Larloch's Minor Drain, Charm Person, and Shield

Nice thread, btw! I think I might just try this out in BG:EE.
