Conan

Off-topic, buttttttt, I'm watching Conan the Barbarian for the first time tonight in HD, and I'm still convinced that it is the most epic movie of all time. I don't think I can ever tire of it.

Slightly on-topic and the point of the thread: I'm curious. How many created a Conan the Barbarian CHARNAME? It was one of the first characters I created. I chose half-orc personally so that I could boost the strength to 19 (besides, what else would a Cimmerian be?) and obviously Barbarian class. If only he could've used that berserking sword without killing his party members he would've been perfect..... That was an awkward story arc.

My first character ever was in BG2, and it was a Elven Berzerker because I liked the contrast between stereotypical elves and berzerkers. I wasn't thinking of Conan~

You know, for as many different characters I have created, and it's a lot, I have never created a berserker. Rebuke me and explain what I'm missing out on. I realize that, when played the right way, they're pretty unstoppable, but I haven't been motivated to pull the trigger. I have created a Bounty Hunter whilst thinking about Boba Fett though and a Swashbuckler with Jack Sparrow in mind. I get pretty random inspirations.

You get to wear armor and the berserk state makes you immune to a lot of nasty effects. It's a good fighter kit.

For the Fighter Class, I've played pure, Wizard Slayer, Kensai, and Dwarven Defender..... I can't give a rational explanation for why I've avoided Berserker. I think I have some negative associations with bad experiences in Final Fantasy V. It was a boring "job" to master. I'm pretty traumatized.

I'm playing a half-orc berserker right now. Str 19, con 19, dex 18, of course (no reason to go for lower values). Seriously OP in BG1, once you get Spider's Bane and even more so once you can berserk 2x per day. Berserker immunities plus free action plus 15 HP per level, and can wear any armor? Forget Conan. Just call yourself Godzilla.

Oh, and you can carry 500 Lbs of stuff too. Sell those ankheg skeletons 4 at a time.

I played a berserker dualed to cleric at level 5, roleplaying him as a rough and tough warrior that discovered a gentler side of himself when he rescued the fighter-mage Indira from the Firewine Ruins (very cliche, I know). Sadly, the promised dialogues & banters of Indira never triggered. I finished the (TUTU) campaign but never heard her utter anything buther selection sounds. Still had enough fun with my warrior turned priest to finish the campaign though.

His name wasn't Conan though, I just got blown away with the berserking derailing the thread. Charname's name was R'am.

It is impossible to derail one of my threads in a way that will make me unhappy. Conversation is naturally discursive. Imagine how boring our face-to-face discussions would be if we always reminded one another to stay on topic.

Besides, I like reading about some of the other characters with whom you've (plural - stupid English) run a playthrough. Hopefully some others will share.

I would think Bard or a Bard Kit (Jester). Set strength to 6 and max out Charisma. He would probably be Elf or Half-Elf class (tall but skinny). He can street luge, but I don't know how that translates over to any BG skills...

    ....Or you can create CONANDO!!!!

I played D&D once with someone who named their character "Noname". It was pronounced "no-nom-ee", but the cleverness of it is self-evident.

All of this conversation inspires me to pay homage to the "Man With No Name" trilogy with a BG character. I assume proficiency points with the sling is the way to go with that one as well as a desire to solo for the most part, accepting a partner perhaps to complete single missions before letting them go, such as Kivan with the Bandit Camp.

Seems fun now that I think about it. I've never played with party members with a strictly utilitarian approach. I usually soloed or employed them full-time unless I traded them out. Sometimes I run with a limited number in mind (such as 3 or 4). With this though, it would be like, "Okay Minsc. I'll help you get Dynaheir and then you're gone. Okay Yesick, you can help me in the mines and then I continue my journey alone," and so on. I like this idea of a quasi-solo character, nobody ever truly getting to know him but everybody hearing *of* him, each with their own stories.

When we did the IWD livestream I created pregens that were all famous characters from RPG books. Conan was the leader. Then the bosses decided we should use generic names instead and I was sad. *insert sad face here* *violins play in the background*

That was a great idea. I hate hearing it was discarded. Do you remember offhand who the others were? Sounds kinda fun to RP a D&D run with a group of destined heroes.

Heh; interestingly enough, the password to gain entry to the Thieve's Guild HQ in BG1 is "Fafhrd', clearly referring to the "Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser" series. There's a name from the past! Although Fafhrd was the warrior of the pair, while the Mouser was the rogue, so the password is a bit off.

Other than Conan ... who would be included? Red Sonya if there is a female in the crew, Elric of Melnibone should get a mention, Merlin and Arthur are just too obvious, but clearly eligible. Lots of famous names from the Iliad, of course. Roland for a paladin, Morgana for an evil female mage.

Hmmm, we should have a poll ... "What 6 famous heroes (or villains if playing an evil group) would you name your adventuring party after?"

It's too bad there's no smithing or crafting in Baldur's Gate - your party's specialist in that could be named Volund! I've also used Hervor (something about her stuck with me, despite the fact she's only in the original story's opening!).

The ruling insisting on generic names is actually not surprising.

In a private game, it's perfectly legitimate to make use of someone else's fictional works as inspiration for your character(s). However, if you're publishing your game as a livestream for the commercial (marketing) benefit of your business, then the original publisher's copyright lawyer is going to start taking an interest.
