in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I know there are simple ways of killing Kangaxx such as protection from undead. However I find when I fight Kangaxx I can deplete his hit points to near death however he doesn't transform into his demi-lich form.

Does anybody know what's going wrong?

    it could be similar to the trolls, try not attacking him for a few seconds (and probably watch him blast your party to pieces)

    Do you mean you just barely got him down to "Near Death" status? I think you might have to get the Lich form down to 0 or 1 HP.

    Restarted Baldur's Gate 2 and he died this time transforming into the demi-lich.

    I had this bug happen to me recently - Kangaxx just refused to turn from lich form into demilich form. I tried hitting him some more, stopping hitting him, mace of disruption, CTRL Y. Nothing worked. The fight went on so long that Kangaxx ran out of spells.

    But after reloading the game and trying again it worked fine the second time around.

    This bug happened to me as well, and a reload fixed it.
